bow pulpit bases

I removed my bow pulpit bases to rebed them and found that they did not have drainage grooves in the bottom of the base. I used a knife edge file to groove them before rebedding with butyl rubber tape.
Find the low point on the base and mark before removal...clean the fitting and clamp in vise, using some type of protection so as to not mar beautiful finish. File groove in base to allow drainage of water. Rebed and test by filling with water. Use the very minimum of butyl rubber tape as it really spreads out when compressed.
