foam replacement candidates
foam replacement candidates
I've just taken out most of the foam under the starboard side seat benches (and I'm glad I did... toxic smelly foam that was keeping the inner hull wet (no damage to fiberglass or wood sub-structure on mine). I realize now that ANYTHING pressed against the inner hull will hold water, given that rain water finds its way in off the toe-rail.
I'm a safety-oriented guy (just read the "can you knock a chrysler down" article), and I'm wondering what the common practice is for replacing funky old foam that you took out? Blocks of foam? dense plastic air-bladders? What's cheap, and what works?
Thanx!

We're just about finished with refurbishing our Chrysler 22, she's slipped, and ready for fun!

Take a look at my posts "Glue Tool" and "What's inside a C-22 settee" One elliminated the gap for water infiltration (at least one of them), the other shows my removal of foam. I was lucky, surprisingly odorless! I expected to become the Toxic Avenger after opening it up, but very happy instead! Fans provide plenty of air flow, nonetheless!
My area will stay empty and used for storage. You could fill it with empty containers, insulation foam chunks, or even Great Stuff spray foam insulation. Not me though. Open and, hopefully, dry!
So, how'd you get your foam out? Pictures?

EE; wine corks
scary part, is that I know someone that has that many corks (it's taken 30 years).
Recycle/Reuse old plastic water and soda bottles, probely have a good air flow to help keep it dry too.

Yea, I like the idea of putting coolers in there with a plywood type cover like the other seats in the boat. If the coolers had a latching lid. Since they are mostly air tight, they would give you flotation for a short time
Thanks
