Mondays 08/24/2008 Question and boating safety Tip
Safety Tip
Watch the water, currents and wind! If the currents flow one direction and the wind blows the same direction, the seas will generally be unusually calm for the breeze. However if the currents flow one direction and the wind blows the opposite direction you well get unusually large seas!!!
MY Daughter and I were on a yacht delivery yesterday. The wind was blowing a steady 20kts and had a very long fetch. The current was 3.4kts the opposite direction. Add to that a second current joining the malay and this is what you get! Tall steep waves with a very short period. They actually look pretty reasonable however they were very unorganized seas creating periodic LARGE waves with huge holes following! I took these photos Yesterday 8/23/2009 from a similar sized boat as the one photographed. Yes we were experiencing the exact same thing!!! What a ride!!

Question for today
What type of radio license must a mariner hold to use a marine band VHF radio when communicating ship to ship?

Wow, interesting delivery!
This is one of the few places where our government has become LESS intrusive. No license required.
BTW... it's "malay".

I believe a licence is not required ship to ship unless you a licenced captain.
Catch the wind and ride the wave, Have fun

Wave-Current Interaction Calculations
It is rather surprising how much the waves can be modified when the current and winds are from opposite directions. This is a classic problem with the Gulf Stream.

Play around with this interactive website and see how things can change on you, in some rather unexpected ways.

Hey Capt. Scott!
I think these knowledge lessons are very beneficial! Way Cool! Been outta the loop some lately but pop in an out just to see what ya'll are up to.... I been doin pretty good on the lessons..
I believe today's answer also is no license required,, unless your into Canadian waters, then ya gotta get one... I don't need one on the lakes here, but agree people seem to think it's just a CB... which means chatter box...
Awesome picts by the way,,
