renovations

Post by javelin »

Thought I would post some things I did over the years

1. reinforced motor mount with stainless steel as fiberglass was cracking

2. wired kill switch on mercury 9.9 to cockpit

3. bought a extension tiller for outboard so I can work the throttle easier

4. made an attachment to handle on motor so that I could turn the motor for sharp turns ( sort of like a very short tiller )

5. cut about 3 inches off rudder so that it doesn't get chewed up by propeller when in the up position ( used to be some site where a guy made rudders specifically for 26ers to avoid this problem )

6. painted entire boat except bottom with interlux ( roller and sponge brush to tip ) very easy to do

7. made a grate for cockpit floor out of pine stock ( now all dirt in under the grate for the season )

8. made doors for the hatchway ( no more storing hatch boards ) best idea ever ( they open inward )

9. made hand grabbers attached to wood guides on the top sliding hatch for safety

10. threaded all lifelines with conduit pvc - looks better and easier to grab

11. stored anchor below as it was rarely used and most times we docked at other clubs on Lake Ontario

12. attached lines and blocks to boom and back to cockpit to work the traveller

13. cut 4" off boom because it use to reach just beyond the main hatch and I frequently banged my head. Main sail never did reach to the end so no problem with sail

14. inside, hooked up bilge pump to sink ( just pull the tube into sink and turn on pump then tuck tube back behind steps )

15. removed those silly backrests and carpeted all sides and seats.

16. hinged all interior hatches ( really good idea )

17. removed starboard side of table ( it was rarely used ) to give better access to cupboard space above keel )

18. removed hinged cover above keel permanently so the I could throw things in rectangular box under that cover

19. put that flexible vinyl flooring planks from home depot on sole ( really easy to install and not glue necessary) looks like real wood cherry coloured

20. bungeed down portapotty on base to prevent from tilting when sailing well over

21. drilled and put a dowel through the handles of the drawers opposite head so they wouldn 't tip out while heeled

22. made the huge hatch in v berth into cooler. insulated hatch cover acts as lid for cooler ( hinged of course )

23. painted entire interior except for arborite which I am going to paint come spring

24. cover wood on outside with pvc pipes to protect wood when boat is not used for more than 3 day ( slit plastic and slip over light and easy to store )

25. made permanent dock lines attached to dock at appropriate lengths so that when I dock, I just attach these lines to the boat without having to adjust lines

PS I CANNOT POST PICTURES. AM TOTALLY INEPT!!!

Hey! I like the hinged door idea for the companion way.

I've been looking long and hard at that for Destiny. Unfortunately opening outward is a bit of an issue due to some vents we have.

I love the idea of inward opening doors however I would worry in foul weather about getting pooped. Would they hold up? We were pooped in our 32' Endeavour once in Admiralty inlet. Bin boards were in, life jackets were on. I was standing at the helm when a wave came up and broke over our stern. Our cockpit was flooded and I was soaked from the waist down.

Please be aware you do not have to be offshore to get pooped. Maybe you keep the old boards aboard for foul weather? Maybe as simple as a crossing wood dowl or such to give extra strength?

Sorry, just my two bits there.

The rest of the upgrades sound AWESOME. I'd love to know more about the painted hull and the process! Pictures WOULD be awesome!

the hinged doors have an inside latch but when we sleep put a dowel right across the inside through the two handles on the port and starboard sides. Also a long hockey stick shaft on the hatch lip to the roof just in front of the light midships inside so the hatch if fixed and cannot be slid open. This security if for the wife when we dock in what appears to be less reputable areas. Make the doors. you will not regret it !
Boat is all tucked in for the long winter and I cannot provide pictures yet.
