No sailing

Well, I made a run (1 hour 15 min) to the boat yesterday afternoon without a lot of pre planning. It was going to be my first attempt at soloing her except for the dog of course.

I pull up to the gate and realize at that moment that the key to the motor is still on the dining room table at home.

Since the dog's understanding of my predicament was limited, she laughed a little, I share it with you all so that you can at least get a few laughs out of it. I did have a nice quiet supper on the boat tied to the dock.

Been there myself - although for me it usually tools. Like a spark plug wrench when the motor's been acting up and I know better. Or last week while I was working on the galley, the hot charger for a cordless tool that tends to lose battery quickly these days.

I pulled the little Coronado C15 almost an hour towards a lake once before I realized the sails were not in the car...

A checklist made the night before seems to help my addled noggin.

That's a good idea. One of those key containers with a combination lock like contractors use would be good.

I lock the main hatch with a combination lock. Then keep the other keys inside the cabin. As long as I remember the combination I can get in.

combination lock for me.... one time for th elife on me , for some reason I could not remember the combo.... went over to a local ACE hardware and bought a little hobby type hack saw and cut the lock off... was pretty ez as it was already kinda rusty..

Oh man! That is funny! Sorry!

I recently ran down to Lady Jo to get 4 life jackets for Destiny. Yup. Forgot her keys. I must have been quite a site squeezing into the port lazerette and underneath to get inside!!!

I keep a padlock on the main hatch and keep the eng key inside the boat and have keys for the lock on all truck and cars keys and admiral keeps a set of keys in her purse. That way I all ways have a key to boat with me.

Realizing my own potential for doing something similar, I keep the boat keys on the same key ring as the trailer and hitch lock keys, and store those in my tow vehicle.

Just don't ask me if I've ever forgotten the ladder.

I've done that trip to the hardware store for the little hacksaw, a couple of times in the last decade. Then, I just kept it with a flashlight in the stern lazerette where, the gas tank. I've had those little locks on the cockpit lockers AND the hatch, so there was no where to crawl.

Now, its a pain when I've forgotten the number combo to the dock area--early in the season. Thank goodness it is only 30 min from door to dock.

On my 2 Ventures and my 26, I use the combo locks from West Marine. They are all brass and you can set your own combination. Just use a house number, phone number ,aniversery you get it. No keys, no forgoten combo!
