Our New project

Post by FranS »

Here are some pics of the reconstruction of our "new" old wooden boat. Once the bottom came off we discovered some rot which required replacement of some of the cross members and the keelson. The center board trunk looked iffy so we decided just to replace it. Some more rot in the chine logs and stem but not bad.

We think its a Chesapeake Flatie, a Sharpie like design. So far its been about four full days of work, hubby has about 30 hours into the project so far. he thinks he has another weeks worth of work. Lucky for us he has summers off! Ive got to get to work doing a patch job on the sail.

Wow, that looks like a lot more work then replacing the keel pin on your C-22. Though that is one pretty boat you have there, I bet it sails really nice too.

Thanks
Alan

Alan, that is exactly what I was thinking too but dared not say.... it is noce that Fran is restoring a traditional wooden boat.... amazing range of skills this couple must have...and tireless energy.... I hear "wodden boat" and figure they belong in a museum ( esp. knowing all the maint. I do on my "low maintenence plastic boat....)

Thanks for the kind words. Im prejudiced but my hubby can fix anything
:-). Just to clarify, it wasn't only the keel pin but the entire bracket system. As you can see she's still in the driveway so who knows :-)

If it was anyone but you Fran I would not have said it.

What do you mean by "the bracket area"? Wow, that sounds much worse then I figured.

Thanks
Alan

The keel brackets are nearly gone, so we have to drop the keel and replace both brackets and pin. It was the one repair we always said we would not want to attempt. Anyway we are excited about the new boat, I'll post more pics when we are done.

I want one or something simular, I like projects and that looks like a worthy one. Thanks for the pictures can't wait to see how it goes.

Whats cool is I just gave my brother in law a 16' bayliner capri ski boat (I traded for some work but didn't really want) that needed some floor work. at first he was like "is it worth fixing"? I showed him your pictures an he said "If there willing to do all that then I'll give it a go. I also showed him projects from othe sites and I could see the wheels in his brain started to smoke...lol After a little rip and tear last night on the old floor showing that it wasn't all that bad I swear I heard him say to his wife to be "I've got my dream boat".
