external chainplates

Post by amayotte »

Ok, so I am thinking about doing external chainplates now.
However, I don't know how large to make them.
Does anyone have an idea as to what dimensions a person should make the plate that rests again the exterior of the hull?

I know it might be much but would 4"x 10" of 1/8" S.S. be too much for each shroud?

Thanks,
Adam

Chainplates

My inclination would be to have narrower but longer plates. 1.5-2 inches wide and 12-16 inches long with nice backing plates should do the trick. Look into previous posts about backstay reinforcements. Also, someone posted some information 2 months ago about losing upwind performance with outboard chainplates.

^^^^ This company is a good way to get cut-to-length metals quickly and easily.

Good luck,

I actually finalized the sizing before I read your post.
I decided on 3"x8".
Although I should explain what I mean by external chainplates. I am going to leave my shrouds where they are now but I'm going to anchor them down to the hull...about 15 inches down. At that point the anchor will be bolted through the hull using 3 bolts.
The 3"x8" piece of stainless will be on the outside of the hull which basically will act as a washer for the 3 bolts. There will also be a piece of stainless on the inside, sandwiching the hull.
There will be a setup like this for each shroud...a total of six.

On top of this, I'm going to replace the material on top of the deck where the shrouds attach. They are pitted and bending so I am replacing them with 3/8 stainless u-bolts.
