New C22 Owner Seeks Advice

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1975 C22 and am currently doing all the things that a boat which sat unsed for 2 years needs. She is really solid, and I am looking forward to getting her in the water this summer. Yes, I am delusional

The previous owner has the keel winch mounted directly to the cockpit step, which clearly is not where it belongs, but I am at a loss for where it should be mounted. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep thats where it goes , should be under it. Mine has a pulley that turns the cable verticle and then down through a clear plastic tube to a thru hull fitting to the keel.

Yup, that's what mine looks like too. OTOH, I notice that it looks like you can look aft under the winch and see all the way to the rudder. Is that the case? My c22 has a wall build just forward of the cockpit floor which blocks the view aft.

It should be a bulkhead in there for cockpit support.

I removed the wall and replaced it with the dowel supports you can see in the picture.They sit directly under the crossmember support that the plywood was originally attached. The area is now a small sump with a automatic bilge pump and the small deck above it is flat and can be used for storage that won't get wet if water does get in that area. I have another free pump that can be set in the main area with enough hose to reach that sump area where it can be pumped out the back.

Thanks so much for the photo and thanks to all of you for all the information.

Now I see how it should be mounted. It is currently bolted thru the step, not into the bulkhead. As you might imagine, the step is cracked and leaks like crazy. Also, there is no support for the bulkhead on my boat, so I will have to remedy that.

I've read through most of the discussions posted on this forum and have learned a great deal about my boat. She needs lots of TLC and some repair work (looks like the bow and a dock had an unexpected meeting), as well as re-seating all the deck hardware. The boat clearly hasn't been maintained, so I have my hands full. Fortunately, my husband is willing to build anything it needs.

Mine has the "Bulkhead" under there,, but I do like the support you've put under there. Opens things up some and most likely gives more support than my older bulkhead does now... May have another mod to work on someday!

I'm the only one thinking in sealing with a bulkhead the space under the cockpit? After all there's the rudder hole in there, and the cockpit lockers, and a failure in the rudder assembly, or on the cockpit leads, it'll mean a sunken boat.

Your winch is not mounted in the aluminum bracket?

That is a sump built for just that scenario, underneath those white boards is water tight and open toward the rear (I have had it filled up) and you can't see it but there is a automatic bilge pump in there.

I would like to add about the winch, mine is bolted though the step also using a aluminum angle for mounting the winch. No leakage from mine so far.

The first I took my boat out, and the rudder assembly was leaking bad, the bilge pump couldn't keep up with the water coming in.

I see, must have been real bad. I think the pump i put in will pump enough to keep up with all but the worst leaks.

I am considering doing something similar. My current idea is to install a bulkhead at about the mid-cockpit point. I can then use velcro or something similar to attach canvas storage baskets/bags to the new bulkhead on the cabin side. I would gain some storage space and keep the cabin dry.

Has anyone done anything like this?

Sounds like a nice compromise to me...

I've redone my keel winch, added teak to the top of the step for the bolts to go through for some added support, and redone my rudder post, all of which has been bone dry. Should add the winch does have the angle support and pulley as pictured... The only water I've gotten below is from 60mph wind gust knock overs that put water over the rail!

Gus I don't worry so much about sinkin, not with all that foam in there anyway. It would probably turtle sideways, not sink. I've hit some things with my keel last summer

one advantage to a swing keel and rudder I guess!

I'll have to be more careful with the 27 which has a fixed keel. One reason I'll be installing a Hummingbird depth/fishfinder/GPS do-dad to my C-22 until the big boats done!
