NEW SAILS ANYONE?

Post by CaptainScott »

If you are interested in new sails for your Chrysler 22, read on, otherwise please ignore this post.

I need sails for a Chrysler 22.
Looks like I'll be ordering new sails for one of my C22 boats.

I will be placing an order most likely in early March. If there is anyone interested in the possibility of getting a discounted price with multiple purchases, NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP! I'm now actively calling and looking for sail quotes. I presume if we buy more than one sail at the same time the prices may be lower.

Now on the other hand, if you already have decent sails and wish to upgrade, I may be willing to purchase your sails this lowering your cash outflow on new sails.

Either way, the clock is ticking, and I have put the ball in motion to collect cash and then SPEND it! I will get sails one way or the other!! LOL!

The sooner you speak up and the more folks that speak up, we may get better prices!

Scott

PS: Anyone with hints towards a good Sail Loft with better prices, fill me in!

Scott,

I came across this listing on craigslist-

http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/boa/1029823694.html

The boat is near Grand Rapids Michigan I don't know if he has the sails from the boat but it may be worth an e-mail to find out.

Scott,

Here may be another option. This ad states the boat comes with 3 mains and 3 jibs. He may be willing to let a few go to increase his bottom line.

Thanks all for the input,
I will indeed start posting prices as I get them and I will ping each of the lofts listed.

Mike,
Thanks for the posts, I have emailed both. That last one looks more possible than the first just from the add. Unfortunately no phone number to call. Oh well.

Thanks again everyone!

It has to be said:

Where's your spirit of adventure Scott? http://www.sailrite.com/ offers kits for the sails for both the c-22 and c-26.

My brother bought the mainsail kit for my c-26, he just hasn't finished it yet.

I have the sailrite catalog back home, and I bought stuff from them to refit my mainsail. I think its better to start small (like changing the slugs) Sewing a sail its not an easy business, but not an impossible one neither.

Oh sure Darin!

Imagine a main hoisted upsidedown! THat's probably what it would look like after I finished it! LOL!

Sailrite comes in at about 650 for a main with 1 reef point and the cheapest materials. I have not done the jib yet. I will later today though.

Actually, we (brother and I) completed most of the work on the main when he was here last May. It's not too difficult. Really. The process is mostly:
1. tape the parts in place with seam tape.
2. Sew over the seam tape.

You will want to have something to roll parts of the sail into, so that it fits under the sewing machine. You can roll it onto itself, and tape it, but it's better to have something to roll it into. A length of pvc pipe, or Christmas paper roll with a slit cut along the length.

They include good directions with each kit, and they answer any questions you have, too.

Sounding easier certainly makes it tempting to give it a go . . . . .

Scott: I tried when I refitted my main sail. Its harder than it looks, like everything, I should have started with a small project, like an anchor sail, but the first step on a journey its the most difficult one (did I get that right?)

I converted a hank on jib to a furler. Rough on the sewing machine, and unfortunately lots of room for improvement on the sail shape, but it's held up well. Assuming you've worked out the basics of sewing -- sounds like you have -- precut panels should give much better results than having the guess best way to trim the luff.

Might also check with Bill James at www.Fxsails.com. I've purchased several sails from him and have been well pleased. A new main using Challenge 5.53 high modulus cloth with two reef points and two full upper battens would run around $600, plus a few more bucks if you want insignia and numbers.

Jeff,

www.Fxsails.com is nice. Online estimator and all. Good prices as well.

Bill's also a really decent guy. I've purchased three sails from FX (and am getting set to pull the trigger on a high clewed 110), plus a couple of sails from Bill when he was with AirForce Sails, before their train wreck. I followed him to FX, and thus far have had no reason to stray.

When Cruising Direct (North Sails's online, budget biz) used to do their online quotes, FX was usually about the same price but used premium quality materials. The sails I've gotten have been beautiful, and have held up well to the use they received.

Hmm,
I'm seeing a trend.

The prices sound quite presentable too. I do want two reef points on the main also given the tenderness of Lady Jo.

Sounds like a phone call is waranted tomorrow.

I went with a loose foot, which makes it MUCH easier to adjust lower sail shape, and two full upper battens, which support a large roach well and reduce flogging when reefing (but can sometimes interfere with raise/lower/reefing when I'm off the wind, since I have steps on the mast).

I also use a cunningham to flatten the sail and pull draft forward when the breeze is up. If I were to order another main, I'd spec the largest roach that would clear the backstay.

I had a third reef added to my dacron main -- don't laugh, there are few days when it's needed but man, when it is it's a wonderful thing -- and would order another like it, but would probably ask about webbing cringles to which I could shackle small blocks rather than the metal cringles. I seldom rig the third reef, and that would remove some undesirable weight from the leech.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

Scott you want to talk about tenderness of lady jo. My Newport has a25' mast on a 19' boat 7' beam and 23'6" luff on the main and 10'6" foot. Only a 250# drop keel. it will fly in light breeze but wind gets to 10 knotts you are reefed( rolling boom) and you are on the trapeze. I have stood on the keel while still moving forward. You don't want to do that more than once. I like my C-26 as it will move in a light breeze and it will take the wind too.

Yes Scott it was but Keel is 4' long but only 14" wide getting feet on keel was to try to keep from turtling but the real wet part came when letting off on the main sheet and trying to climb back in the boat. If I had not had a home made trapeze I probably would have had a good swim. Sorry nobody was taking pics that day and if I saw some it would probably scare me more than I was.

Got a reply from Bill at FX sails -- http:fxsails.com

Standard Chrysler 22 main with two reef points: 513 bucks
Standard 110 jib is 477 bucks.

If we order 5 or more sets then we can get a 10% discount.
That is almost 100 bucks off!

Since I have not even received enough queries here about new sails, I'll assume getting 5 orders by March 6 is unlikely going to happen.

Either way, my plan is to either have or have ordered sails by March 6. Anyone interested in talking about a combo order, just let me know and I will arrange it such that we all order on the same day and indicate we are a group.

Otherwise, an option that has surfaced is a local C22 complete boat, trailer, and EXTRA SAILS! No motor. I may be splitting the purchase price with a friend, keeping the sails, letting him keep the trailer and simply dumping what is left cheap. All depends on the condition of the sails and the final outlay I need to put out. The seller is proud of his boat so there may be some parts and pieces for sale.

Interesting that this option should pop up just after I decided to buy new! LOL!

Ok all,

Not one person has stepped up with specific interest is a new set of sails or group purchase at this time.

I will likely go ahead and simply order mine tomorrow unless I see a reply tonight. It will take 5 sets to get a 10% discount and given the lack of response I prefer to not wait until March 6.

I have now accumulated the cash for the purchase and it is literally burning a hole in my pockets! lol!

Thanks for everyone who jumped in with ideas and suggestions as to where to look for sails. It is greatly appreciated!!!!
