This thread caught my eye
We just covered Dayenu (made a crutch for the mast to be raised off the bow and stern rails about 18" to provide space underneath to work in and on the boat this winter. We have our San Juan Island charts on the walls and ten linear feet of "TO DO" lists on the marker boards in the shop...
One of the things I don't have on board is an automatic bilge pump... Size (GPH) is one question, another (that goes along with wanting a separate circuit for a mast mounted anchor light) is thoughts on how to and should I have a way to connect both these circuits directly to the house battery so everything else can be shut off (Circuit breaker/fuse installed close to the battery? LED for the anchor light, heavier than needed wiring in the mast to help insure that if anything "blows" it will be the breaker/fuse.
Right now, when my battery switch is on, everything is on (including stereo and depth meter and it's night light.
Any suggestions as to brand/make of pump? hoping for a remote sensor mounted in the bilge with the pump located at the rear close to the batteries so that there isn't a long lead of wire between pump and battery.
If the pump is located at the rear of the boat and the input hose is fed to the rear of the keel, I should think that a larger diameter hose would help allow greater flow?

Although new to sailing, I have owned many boats over the years. It rains alot here in the NW and water in the boat is inevitable without a cover. For most instances, that is all anyone need be concerned about.
Actually being holed while out is a very remote possiblilty. So I suggest the basic pumps that are available at any marine store - brand is not that important so I won't recommend any. A typical 500gph pump is small and reliable - about the size of a can of soup. 500gph may not sound like alot of water movement, but it will empty a bilge very quickly.
My current boat throws the water out a thru hull in the aft stern quarter, just below the top of the transom, requiring the little pump to lift the water about three feet from the bottom, run it thru six feet of hose (typical clear plastic 3/4") and shoot out the hole in back - which it does with great force. The pump is probably twenty years old.
By installing a larger diameter hose, you may be reducing the efficiency of the pump. Just a guess. Others may know for sure.
Whatever you do, I would suggest a backflow stop to keep the hose water from coming back into the bilge or you could have a quart of fetid water in there all the time.

I hadn't even thought of the backflow valve! GREAT IDEA!!!!
I have a larger, manual Whale Gusher pump I plan on isntalling in the cockpit for the "unimaginable" emergency...
By biggest concern was leaving the boat in the water and wanting to make sure I was covered... I guess 500GPH iw actually quite a lot of water... More than rain would do. I only have one through-hull below the waterline (knotmeter) and I'm the type that worries with an over-worked imagination. It's a super high quality one made of metal with twin locking O-Rings...
Definitiely on my to do list this winter for our San Juan Trip. We plan on being in the water for 4-6 weeks.

I'm not familiar with what size thru-hull hole a knot meter requires, but it would have to be around 1/2" or around there to overwelm a 500gph pump. Anyway, your best defense against that kind of failure is a good bead of 5200 or something similar.
And, yes, the one arm bandit is a good insurance policy in the worst case scenario.
Just a comparison: That little old 500gph pump in my C-22 shoots out the water like a house hose - about three or four feet before it hits the water. That's good pressure and speed. It emptied what I believe to be around 5 gallons in just a few seconds (maybe 10) after record rains here landed several Texas Longhorns in the area about two weeks ago.
