Cautionary note

Reading gregcrawford's post about his galley (nice work) reminded me of something I read years ago in Wooden Boat Magazine, about working with tropical hardwoods. The article was written by a DR. who also liked working with wood. ALWAYS WEAR A DUST OR PARTICLE MASK when sawing, routing or sanding any tropical hardwoods. Wood from the tropics contain particularly nasty guano which can cause lung cancer. It's a good idea to wear a dust mask when working with all woods. If I can find the article I'll post it.

The article I read dates back 22 years or more and I've unable to locate it. Doing some checking, they can all be pretty bad. Wear A Dust Mask!

Excellent advice...these things all add up over time and can cause trouble.

It's not just the guano. Several of the exotic hardwoods create sawdust that is poisonous. A great reminder for me. I have a dust mask - now I need to find it.
