Winch size - on sale

Hey I found some winches on sale and am wondering what people think, if they are too small or if they will work.
They are Anderson #12ST for 394.00. They have a gear ratio of 1.3:1 and a
power ratio of 9.5:1
They seem a little small but the anderson website does size them for the C-26.
What do you experts think?

Not too small and self tailing good choice if I could afford them I would buy them for my C-26

I have a set of chrome Lewmar 14ST winches, with 2:1 gearing and a 15.8:1 power ratio, and they are barely adequate in strong breeze. They're OK for me, but when it blows hard I'd be really happy to have a set of 32s instead. Just wouldn't be happy to have to pay for them. My wife and my mom can't handle them in a blow, and even my very fit 21 year old daughter (she's on the rowing team!) has trouble with them if it's screamin'.

Defender has the 14ST in aluminum at $369 each right now (they aren't on sale). I think I paid about that for the chrome ones on sale in 2005.

I have decided to go with the andersen #18. I just found out it's on sale too.

Curious what is the OEM on our C-26? I have the OEm and would love more mechanical advantage and also ST's and I might think about a replacement at these prices but don't know about "andersen" and the review says they are very sensitive to line size and the reviewr had to rplace many of his lines..

The oem on the C-26 is Barlow 15's. Not too sure the specs on that.
I did order the andersen #18 ST. I will let you know how it goes.
As for changing lines, mine are all old old old and I need and excuse to buy new ones. That being said all that will have to be changed are the genoa sheets.
Can't beat the price from what I've seen.

curious, what would be the best mounting practice...

how would we remove / mount our winches... the "smooth headliner" hides any access to the bolts and do we have to chop away at our headliner... do you mount through the headliner ?( but then when you compress the headliner has a void between the headliner and deck... do you put steel bushings in that void...? have the hardware protude into the cabin?

do you rip out the whole headliner...?

That is somewhat of a tough question to answer. I don't remember what the interior of a finished chrysler looks like. I gutted mine about two years ago, so I have access to everything.
I am slowly rebuilding the boat. Slowly.

I am however going to build a new mounting platform for the new winches. One that provides a better angle of entry for the sheets. The winch requires an 8 or 10 degree angle entry so I am going to try and achieve that. Probably make it out of wood and mount it where the existing ones are.

Amayotte your boat doesn't have blocks about 2' behind winches? Mine does and that cures the angle issue also they work no matter what headsail you are using.

I do have the blocks but it doesn't seem to provide a sufficient angle of attack. My blocks foul easily.
