Fixin' the C22 rudder leak

Post by Gus »

Last night I took the rudder assembly appart so I can fix the leak. The weather this weekend is rainy and cloudy, so no sailing.
In the process of removing the rudder post, somehow the bottom thru hull snaped in half. So I decided to replace the whole thing with a piece of PVC pipe, epoxy and glass, and make the connection permanent. I didn't like the thru-hulls, the flexibe water paper and the clamps, I think the PVC with the epoxy is more seaworthy.
I couldn't find a pipe to fix in the holes for the thru-hulls, so I went with a 2 inch pipe. I had to remove some glass from the hull with a rasp first, then with a dremel tool with the sanding disk.
Cleaning everything took longer than installing the pipe and glassing it over, but I wanted to make sure the epoxy with work, I don't want more leaks!!!
