Chrysler 26 Swing Keel Winch Replacement?

Fellow Chrysler Sailors,
I'm sure you've all got the same Spring fever I have in getting the boat set for summer sailing. I planned to inspect the swing keel cable and pin this winter and had the somewhat fortunate experience of having the cable break while on the (not so) hard in the backyard, thus I avoided the sharp fall in the water and jam that many have described elsewhere. I would like to replace the whole system including the winch since it is pretty rusty, but I'm unsure which winch to choose. Fulton has a complete line of automatic brake winches of different weight capacities http://shop.easternmarine.com/index.cfm ... goryID=307. My hunch is to go with a 1500 lb capacity (K1550), but I wonder if anyone has any thoughts as to the best choice. It is somewhat unclear what the mounting dimensions are on these. Obviously, the replacement will need to fit the space provided. The old one is approximately 6" tall, 5" wide and 7" deep (from mounting bracket to the edge of the drum) and the hub diameter is approx, 2.5". Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

If you haven't seen it yet, you can find a tech spec page with a blowup diagram (but no mounting template) at:

Note on the specs they rate it at 1550 pounds on the 1st layer of line, only rated at 700 pounds when full of line, so I guess use for a C26 is somewhere in between with about 9 feet of cable ?


Grainger also carries these. Happy summer sailing, looks like we are pushing the completion of our project back to the fall.....

Thanks for your message. I had seen the specs sheet but didn't note any dimensions on it. I did note an email address for Fulton on the file you sent so will contact them directly.

One additional note on this question: I noticed after posting the original message that the winch I removed was made by Fulton with the model number K1500. I'm hoping the K1550 will drop right in and will post a reply to this post with details when I learn more.

Hey, let us know if it is a good fit ! At the price it goes for, I might as well replace mine while doin the restoration. Heaven knows I'm replacing most every thing else ! <g>

I replaced mine a couple of years ago with a Fulton K1051 winch. It was an exact replacement for the original that was severly rusted. the bolt pattern was a perfect fit. My only concern with putting in a K1550 would be the overall length; 9.23 inches (k1550) vs 7.46 inches (k1051). I will say the 4.1:1 gear ratio with a 700 lb centerboard does work some arm muscle!

Thanks for the info on the K1051. I have a call into Fulton to get their input. I will check out the K1051; looks as though Northern Tool carries this model also. What size wire did you use? I see they suggest 7/32".

I dont' remember the exact size of wire I used, but it was the largest diameter that the Worst Marine store in St. Petersburg stocked. One other thing... don't put to many wraps of wire on the drum. I put 2-3 full wraps with the board down and have had no problems. Good luck!

Thanks for the info on the wire. FYI, I got the mounting specs for both the K1051 and the K1550. The fellow from Fulton said the K1550 should probably replace the K1500 that I removed since it has a 1500 lb rating. According to the specs, it appears as though the K1550 has the same bolt pattern as the one I removed and so I have ordered this one from Northern Tool. I am not sure if there is any mechanism for uploading the spec sheets onto this site, so if anyone is interested, I can email them directly. If the K1550 doesn't drop right in I will post a reply to this thread.

Fellow Chryser Sailors,

Quick follow up to previous post--the K1550 dropped in and appears to work well. I did need to enlarge the inner portions of some of existing holes to accomodate bolt ends, etc. This was pretty easy using a dremel tool and is not noticeable from the exterior.

Revisiting this topic since I found a non-working winch on the project C26.
While EE has the K1500-1550 winch on it the project boat has an old 950 model..

So I've sent Capt Scott some docs on the two winches mentioned in this old thread, the 1051 and 1550 winch.

Was not able to find a doc or any info for the 950, but the diagram for the K650 looks very close so I sent that along as well..seems the handle, shaft and friction disc setup is different between the old 950 and the 1051 or 1550.

my friction disc does not work and I used a piece of line and tie the handle off the only time it could be dangerous is if your hand slips.
