C-22 Marine Battery?

What type of battery are you all using for powering the lights?

I'm using a Fleet Farm Bright-Start Marine/RV to run lights, radio, cd player, and electric start for the motor. It is one of their deep cycles that they sell and I think it is around 90AH. It has been in the boat now for at least 5 years and is holding up well.

Sad as it sounds, my electrical needs are extremely limited on Lady Jo so I use whatever my old car battery is at the time. The solar charger keeps enough juice for listening to the VHF and CD player. If I'm out after dark, I'm likely motoring anyway so the 12v off the motor can charge and light up the boat.

Got a small 12v one, hooked it up... and the wires melted/started on fire. So now I need to rewire the boat. It started after I pulled this knob on the port side of the cockpit. What does that normally control?

the knob would be the light switch, it sounds like you had a short somewhere.
Now would be the time to add an electrical panel.

I use the walmart deepcycle batteris. I know they're not true deep cycle, but for the price and most of our electrical demands it's just fine. I like to over do it so I have two 125ah deepcycles wired together with 2 guage wire. Then I ran 8guage to the fuse panel and common bus. I have 2 5watt solar panels running through a solar charge regulator (8.5 amp Sunforce regulator is a PWM and is only $35 at Lowes). This set up runs 3 oscilating fans, a stereo, VHF, nav. lights, anchor lights, reading lamps, cabin lights, deck light, little led's on companionway, and a plug for the coffee maker/inflattible pump/wash down pump/etc. I have never had a dead battery, even on a trip lasting several days. Don't over think it or spend alot on fancy gels, most anything works unless you have a fridge, microwave, or other real high energy hog.

Group 27 marine deep cycle battery from AutoZone here. It does the job. I was considering a dual battery setup, but with LED interior lights and my solar panel to keep it topped up, it seems to do just fine.
