Motor size for a C22

Hello All,
I picked up a C22 last Thanksgiving and Ive been outfitting her for a trip next fall. Im rigging the boat with a set of 11 foot oars to use from the cockpit, Im also going to have an auxiliary outboard. Im hoping to get a small 4 stroke motor but I still want something with enough power to keep us off the rocks in a gale. What do you all think is a reasonably sized motor? The boat will be about 4300 lbs gross weight.
Thanks for any advice,
Zak

Welcome aboard Zak!

I have a 9.9 2 stroke on Lady Jo. It is pleanty!

I recently bought A used 6 hp for Lady Di. I have yet to launch Lady Di but expext 6 hp to be pleanty. One of the others hear will likely chime in!

Hey Zak,

I have never had a C-22 but I did have a Sirius 21 and they are an extremely well made boat (heavy) and I had a 9.9 hp motor on her.
I put her through a lot of heavy weather, not intentionally, but she had no problems with that 9.9.
However, that being said, I did a fair bit of research on motor sizes and weights for my new C-26 when I was looking and found that for the extra HP a 15 was the same weight as a 9.9. In fact most 15 HP motors, from what I read, are simply a 9.9 with a different carb and some jetting.
The weights are different of course with the new 4 strokes so I don't know much there since I was looking for a 2 stroke. 4 stroke was out of my price range.
Hope that helps a little.

We have a Merc 7.5 hp with the long shaft, enough power for us, but I've never tested it in a real extreme situation

7.5 4 stroke Honda here (mid 80's model), half throttle gets me up to hull speed. They originally came with a Chrysler sailor 6 if your ordered it. If I was going to buy a new one I would buy a 4 stroke 8hp but you could go down one size and be fine as long as you don't head out in any fast moving currents with a head wind.

I have a Nissan 9.9 but am sure a 4 or 6 would do the job, because in a blow, I reef and furl to get close to the fairly secluded dock area, and use the motor for about 200 yards in and out.

hey why don't you keep her all original and get this

great price range, very vintage and you know what.. I still have mine OEM kciker ( the exact same one in the auction) and it ran fine but I replaced her last season with a 9.9 4-stroke suzuki for mother-in-law on-board insurance and quiet....it is VERY heavy but I would not go back to a 2 stroke again now that I am spoiled

Hi Guys,
Thought I would give my 2 cents on this. We had a 6 hp merc 4-stroke w/ a pull start. Last year when I injured my shoulder we had no way to start the motor. So we could not sail all summer.
My wife can not pull the the rope hard enough when the shaft is in the water. ( hard to get leverage over the transom)
We now have a 9.9 2 stroke w/ electric start. If anything ever happened to me my wife can start the engine and get the boat back to the docks.
Whatever you buy try and get an electric start.

Yeah, I have a 9.9 Mercury and am quite satisfied for my 26'. It has an electric start also and it is the cat's meow after having a pull start Honda. I did make a remote shut-off as during an emergency, pushing the button on the throttle or the switch on the motor may at times be difficult to reach . The kill switch I made is just a toggle switch near the base of the tiller. Russell

Ahoy there,

Accourding to the plate on my back of my cockpit of my 1976 C-22, 10hp is the maximum load. I have a 9.9hp 2 stroke motor, never been out in bad weather but it hauls, fully loaded and never had it on 100% power. I go to about 3/4 power.

Thanks
Alan
