Chrysler 22 rudder repair

OK! I'm a rookie, and am not sure about how to describe the help I need. I just removed the rudder and noticed some definite problems. Mainly, the hole in the center, on which the kick up rudder rotates, is not round anymore. It's sort of oval shaped, which causes it to... not pivot, but shift, but not smoothly. Doesn't seem secure. So... can I repair the rudder itself, maybe with a metal bushing? Or do I need to look further?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If the hole in the rudder itself is out of round, you could drill the hole out to a slightly larger size, epoxy in a proper sized dowel as a plug, then redrill the hole to the original size. Be sure to waterproof and coat the inside of the new hole to keep the new wood from swelling around the pivot bolt.
Leaving enough room in that last step for a bushing between the bolt and the new hole might save you from doing it again one day.

EE, I think this will help. Gus actually did extensive repairs to all the thru-deck assmbly, and I appreciate the credit (that I could even THINK about doing a repair that involved), but EE's idea gets closer to the damage I need to address.

Just be sure to closely match the hole size to the dowel size for a snug fit, keep us posted !

Hey again Robbie,
I'll send you an e-mail with what I did to my rudder. It goes up and down easily, especially after putting in the rope roller guide at the base of the rudder post the ropes go up into. As long as it's apart I would recommend putting the guide in also!!

Emergency Exit, if I'm going to be filling the hole and re-drilling, why not fill the entire hole with same filler? I could cover one end with tape, then fill the hole. After it dries, sand flush. Why not? Much thanks in advance.

Works for me, as long as the filler you use fills in and dries as solid as the dowel, it is probably a better repair -
