Prevent mast peg hole breakout on mast raising system

It seems that the breakout on the mast foot peg hole is not uncommon. If I read the mast raising instructions correctly they direct you to use the jib halyard to connect to the gin pole to raise the mast. If the halyard is tied off a bit too long or it stretches the pole may lean toward the bow at an angle to put tremendous pressure on the peg causing the foot to crack or breakout altogether. I never use the halyard in this way , instead I use the forestay to the pole until the mast is up then use the jib halyard to hold the mast while I attach the forestay to the bow. I’ve used it this way with and without a furler . I hope this helps prevent damage for some new owners.
