Adding to the mast head. Any lightning protection required?

With my C26 mast down this winter, I plan to add a VHF antenna (I currently have a 6 ft fiberglass whip installed on the aft gunwhale) and an anchor light (strangely enough I now have a white light about 3 ft below the mast head, facing forward; too high to be the steaming light; not 360 degrees therefore not an anchor light; then what is it?)
The wind indicator is already up there doing a good job. No wind speed indicator and no plan to add one.
How do I protect the VHF radio from lightning? Is there some surge protection available? Or is the current (no pun intended) practice to just cross fingers and hope for the best?
