I have a question. I am a thrifty person. I got the boat for a great deal.

I broke my tiller.

Call me cheap, but I can't justify spending $200+ for a new tiller.

I tried using a $5 wood shovel handle.

I broke the shovel handle after about an hour sailing.

Any suggestions as to my next attempt at saving money?

Try a wheelbarrow handle. My C-22 had been broken into and the tiller broke before I bought it and as a quick replacement I put in a 2 1/4" X 1 3/4" wheelbarrow handle cut to length. The end has about 8" of round handle made to fit a hand and the 1 3/4" width just fits the bracket. (I may have sanded a little) And a wheelbarrow handle has excellent load carrying ability.

I am a thrifty fellow as well - look around for a "Railroad Adze" handle. Will be made of hickory or oak, has a slight curve in it, and served me well for a year. Will cost you between 15-20 dollars.
But do get two in case one breaks
underway.

I bought my boat last year and the tiller arm on it has been replaced. The gentleman who had it prior used a piece of hard wood and cut it to the shape and then carved it some what smooth. I sanded and varnished it this winter and it looks good.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll post some pics of when I get it fixed.
