C-22 Outboard Motor Mount Restoration

Hello,

I thought I would post some before/after pictures of the out board motor mount that I had freshened up. In particular, I used "soda blasting" to clean up the anodized aluminum. I found that blasting with baking soda removes scum and stains while preserving the anodized coating. One of the things to note - the rust stains and scum are gone.

The new ash mount is installed too. I cross-grained 1" and 1/2" thick pieces to make some "super plywood." I think it will work.

The first image of the blaster shows the lever position I used so that I did not use excessive baking soda. The blaster was $16 on sale at Harbor Freight the other day. This size is good for small parts. It is great for cleaning up carburetors and alternators too.

Regards,

B

That looks fanatastic! I think I'll choogle on down to Harbor Freight and git me one of those.

I'm not familiar with Flickr. I use Photo Bucket - reluctantly - as I tihnk all these free hosting sites are buggy and cumbersome. But, that's the price of free.

In Photo Bucket, you just bring up the pic and select IMG over on the right side of the page with a left click. It should turn yellow and say "copied".

Then just go back to your post and paste. Buggy, though.

My pics are all edited to about 640x500 or something.

the nice thing about baking soda - you can leave it lay around and let the rain wash it away, or hose it down. You do not need extensive personal protection equipment except for safety glasses, dust mask and hearing protection. The worst effect is "salty" residue all over yourself. Try it on an old pair of shoes - it cleans them up pretty good. Good for anything which is not plain steel.

Glad to help because I have gotten so much from this site.
