Crossing

Post by Padiunka »

Well, we are off starting very early Sunday morning on our first crossing of Lake Michigan. We will be making a run from Sturgeon Bay to Frankfort (55mi). This will start of a 9 day run on the north end of the lake. We hope to hit Frankfort Mi, South Manitou Mi, Washington/Rock Island Wi, Fayette Mi, Menomonee Mi, and back to Sturg. But like any trip like this we will go where the weather takes us. High light will probably be some diving on the wrecks around South Manitou. Fins and wet suits packed! Wish us luck. I will follow up when I hit home port again.

Well folks, made it back. I know yall like pictures so here you go: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1019 ... -HSupnlqQE

Great trip with only a little slip up at the end. Over 200 miles under sail. Crossed over on monday in a good wind window. 10-20 knt NE winds the whole way there on a close reach/haul. 2-6 footers with the occasional 8. Time = 9.5 hours from slip to Frankfort including clearing the three bridges in sturgeon bay. Fuel used = 1/4 gallon. Crossed back on Friday after being fogged in on Thursday. 10-25 knt winds out of the south. Beam reach the whole way! :) Time = 8 hours from slip to break wall, about another 45 min after that with a coast guard escort after they pulled us off the break wall. Had an engine failure when taking down sail in close quarters. The wall looked more inviting than the quarted million dollar boat crowding the channel. Ship and crew performed fantastic with only top coat and some fiber damage on the bow. Coasties saw the whole thing and said we made the best decision in the unfavorable seas. Nice guys. I had the engine fixed by the time we cleared the channel and we returned to our slip for inspection on our own power. Needless to say we needed a cold one after that. The old girl is doing fine, resting in her slip. Alittle grinding and some west system goes along way. We should be back out on the water by Saturday.

I will get more pictures posted as they trickle in from the crew.

GREAT TRIP!!!!!
