Been there, done that one, although not to the extent you had to as my underlying wood was ok. I had the step plate rip out while stepping the mast

If it were me I'd rebuild it pretty much the same way as original. But I'd take some steps to insure it didn't happen again such as adding some weepholes at the base to let moisture out. Or maybe be sure to coat the replacement block in resin and glass..

Thanks for the info, any idea what type of wood to use for the replacement block?

Welcome to the forum, I do like your C26 mast step diagram, I'm not at the point in my project to work mine just yet but you can see I also have a crack to deal with and what checking I've done up to this point has me believing that the damage is mostly superficial. Removing the screws and step showed no wood damage as of yet... hopefully my prognosis will hold true when I get around to this part. Again welcome and the more photos the better. 8)

Terrence,

keep an eye on that crack, that is how mine started, i think once water penetrated the gelcoat, it froze and made the crack bigger, until water started getting into the core material. keep it sealed really good. There was no barrier from the mast step down through the cabin top core material, so I think i may have some deck repair as well.

Looks like the underlying wood in yours was same as mine
http://pwp.att.net/p/s/community.dll?ep ... thumbs&ck=

but my damage was limited to the glass layer. I'd sure go with a hardwood, as dense and rot resistant as possible

Thanks for the advice, I do have the step covered better than what the photo implies and with luck we don't get many hard freezes in Wilmington N.C. Even so to play it safe I'll move it high up on my to do list.

Personally, I wouldn't over-think it. The original setup lasted 30 years, so redoing it the same way should be fine.

That looks bomb proof! Be careful you don't chip or crack the hatch when you slide it open, it looks like it could contact the new mast pedestal.

Looking for parts that are similar to this mast step for a 1975 Chrysler 22. Any pics links or info appreciated

Welcome aboard ! If you are in need of the mast step hook, I'd encourage you to look into a mast hinge plate. Much better solution than that hook was..

Lost hook base for mast

Where did you obtain the mast base hinge and how did it fit into Chrysler mast?

There are several good threads on the subject, one is at

viewtopic.php?t=3375&highlight=mast+hinge

if you click on Search, then enter "mast hinge" and choose 'Search for all terms' several should show up as well..
