iPad or Droid device as chartplotter ?

Post by EmergencyExit »

Had mentioned to Capt Scott I was looking into this - and thought it might be good to ask the Chrysler brain trust for input.

Have been looking into using an iPad or a Droid device as a chartplotter, and it looks like you could get a really large screen this way, cheaper than a conventional dedicated chartplotter with a smaller screen.

For instance getting a GPS/WiFi/3g iPad, loading it with iNavX http://www.inavx.com/ software, then download fresh charts via WiFi, and head out..using the device GPS and the iNaxV to plot..

Anybody doing anything similar out there ? iPhone,. iPad, Droid ?

Thanks Lyle, good options there as well. I downloaded that software and am playing with it now..

I actually have an old laptop I could use, but would really like something flat to mount to the pedestal. A Windows tablet might do the trick as well as an iPad.

I use OpenCpn and SeaClear on a netbook with hookups to a cockpit mounted USB monitor and also hookup to my interior mounted 20" LCD when I want it (and can afford the energy). I have decided to dump SeaClear due to all the good development that's been happening on OpenCPN.

I have a complete duplicate setup ready to go on an old laptop, and software and charts ready to go on a thumbdrive. So I have backup plans covered.

I also have NutiCharts on my Android phone, and bought a waterproof pouch for it on Ebay. I haven't had a chance to try this out yet but I'm looking forward to it's Active Captain interface.

Thanks Mariner !

My old phone was dying anyway, so I talked my provider into a Galaxy S2 for $9.99 with another 2 year commit. So far I'm land testing MxMariner, Beer Can Racer, and Nuti Charts with Active Captain..Spent about $6 on apps so far, lol..

BCR doesn't do nav, but speed/distance/bearing and such

Two of the features that interested me on BCR was the SOG/VMG comparison (once you've input your destination )as well the TACK feature that will give you angle off wind (once you've input wind direction).

Although primarily meant for racing some of the features are handy outside that...

Mariner,

For windows there is a rdp app for both iStuff and android. It's meant to connect to a windows computer. I was thinking of this setup for big brother's big boat. Permanent nav computer and use rdp from mobile devices. If you add a navigation app on the mobile device, you have two ways to navigate up and running. Believe me when I say that you don't want to have a computer overheat approaching a busy, tricky, not well marked, multiple draw bridges, section of the ICW at night.
