Now I have to say,
This is the kind of thing that you should look for!
Reminds me of the ole' saying "One mans junk is another mans treasure!"
Alan and I found a C22 that the owner just wanted it to go away! Unfortuantely for the owner we learned of his attitude towards the boat prior to seeing it. No, It was not free. However the price was very, very attractive after all was said and done!
Funny thing is, I had a neighbor that loved Lady Jo and was looking for a similar boat. When I brought the new C22 home he and his wife looked her over and turned down my offer to sell her for what I got her for. They could have easily used a power washer and bleach and tripled their money in a day.
Rest assured, the derelic that Alan and I dragged home will become a thing of envy to a lot of folks.
So, when you see a free boat or even a reasonably priced one, go look. You never know what may happen! Crazy low ball offers generally get denied however on a fairly regular basis, they get accepted!
OK, sorry, I'll get of my soapbox.
( same box I use to clean up my current C22! LOL! )

It looks like a early mid 70's Person 34, and just the fact its floating means that its not all that bad
I have meet alot of people along the way with very nice older boats that tell about the condition when they got them and what it took to get them seaworthy which hs impressed me.
What I;ve seen is that you could go out and spend well over $100k for a boat that size new or spend $30k for one thats in "good shape" but will still need repairs and upgrades or get something like that and have fun making it your boat.
My C-22 was a free boat for the most part and because I found I enjoyed working on it almost as much as sailing it has put me where I am today.
I with them luck

Alan and my kidding asside, I'd venture to say Alan is at least with you on your soapbox as I am!
Mine was a mess too, though not quite as bad as your new Lady Jo. Full of various stages of biological breakdown experiments and composts. Lots of pine straw, leaves, standing water, mold...it had it all! Which consiquently made my job of negotiating much easier. Asking $2700 with motor, I himed and hawed about not knowing anything about it (which I didn't) and that it might not even float. Such a big risk on my part, told him if he didn't sell it and was getting desperate, to give me a call, but $2700 was just way too much for me. When he asked what I would be willing to pay, he accepted my $1200 offer.
After an afternoon of liberal power washing with cleaning solutions and bleach, days of removal of materials and water soaked "floatation" foam in the starboard settee, the odor is currently gone!
Make no mistake, I've got a lot more than $2700 into it so far, and there are some that get advertised here for less than I have invested that are "ready to sail", but this is my way. I bought into a project to learn about the art of sailing. I already have aptitude for refurbishing things, this is a fulfillment of a dream to get into sailing on my terms.
Thanks Scott, and all of you who inspire the rest of us daily in our hobby/obsession.

when I bought my 26 I took it to the water to check for leaks and remember I paid $700 with a new trailer and a friend of mine saw it and asked if I would take $3500 for it and I said no and that was with no motor. I love the boat.
Catch the wind and ride the wave, Have fun

OMG, and I thought I got a good deal! I paid $500 for mine but trailer's seen better days. It's been reinforced with angle iron. Good enough for now but I'm always scouring Craigslist : ) From what I've seen so far, I can get a 22 with a halfway decent trailer for a less (sometimes much!) then a trailer by itself. Hmmmm, again, a sailor's gotta do what a sailor's gotta do : )) I see a 22 or 26 in my future : )

We bought ours after a "sea" trial. She doesn't leak from below the waterline, had more recent standing rigging and sails, and a roller furler. Needed some TLC, but the price was reasonable at $1400. We have replaced most of the running rigging and added some items like the vang. Most of the work has been in the cleaning her up department, most every inch was pretty filthy. Now we get to enjoy our afternoon-evening sails, the topsides and deck painting can wait a little while until we get the new boat in shape to be dunked. Meanwhile someone needs to confiscate my credit and debit cards and block my E-Bay and Craigslist access.
