Bedding with Butyl Tape

Just wanted to put this out where it can be seen and found...

This is an excellant an interesting article on rebedding hardware. The guy also sells a high quality Butyl tape which is on the 3rd page of the how to. Apparently there are differant grades, composition etc of Butyl tapes and he discourages using the ones typically found in RV, HD, and plumbing supplies...

Sorry, I guess it shows I also read other sailing forums

I saw this a while back too, Billy. Great article! It and some of the other articles I've read have "sold" me on using butyl tape for bedding hardware. Of course, I've overdrilled all my hardware holes and filled with thickened epoxy before redrilling. Should eliminate any water migration in the core if any gets past the tape.

Here's a quote from another of my posts:
Here's what I ordered:

It's thicker than what the guy calls for but it's nice. Gonna use it for all my hardware next spring after painting, but I have used it on a couple other projects--nice stuff.

Maybe what he has is better, I dunno, but I'm happy with what I have. And at 20 rolls for $60, affordable too.
Like I said, I don't know about different "types" of tape this guy claims to exist, but the stuff I got is very nice. Plyable, sticky and lots of it for a great price. I'm going to be reseating ports as well.

Anyways, food for thought.

Good article...I used RV Butyl tape and it seems to be working on my deadlight install...it is wider and thicker than this fellow was using...also it has a slightly rippled surface that seems to smooth out with compression.

I suppose heating it a little would let it moosh out more easily...have to experiment.
