Just purchased a C26 and am kind of hesitant to raise the mast using the gin pole method with the boom. Has any one had success doing this or come up with a better way? Also the current sails are original and I would like to buy some more if anyone has any they want to get ride of.

Welcome aboard ! I've only used the gin pole method, and if you go slow and steady its not that scary...just dot all the i's and cross all the t's !!

At first glance your C26 looks in fairly good shape, would like to see more of it if you are so inclined. Have yet to raise my own mast on my C26 project; try a forum search under mast raising a ton of information is to be found there. Also check out you tube under same heading to get some ideas... welcome to the forum.

I have a C-22 and I only use the boom/gin pole method. I remember a couple years ago when one of our members had the marina put it up for them with a crane and the cost was in the Thousands to put it up for him. As I recall he paid more to have it raised than I paid for my whole boat.

I believe later he found how well the boom/gin pole method was.

Try it you'll like it. Take your time, use the bridals and get maybe 2 more people to help you the first time. I'm betting in a year you'll be taking up and down all by yourself.

Thanks for the answers. I paid 2200.00 (felt like that was a good price)for the boat and it took me a half day to clean all the junk out of it(over 30 life jackets and OMS seat cushions, some still in original package). I wasn't able to find all the equipment to rig the boom as a gin pole, ie the 5/16 X 3inch pin. I trip to the hardware store should solve that. My Dad use to own a chrysler marina back in the day and I have good memories of being around the boats and water so I'm happy to own one. I've started the seat cushions and plan on taking a wheel and compound to the hull this week end. Will post my photos as I progress.

Early on we tried to raisd the mast via the "armstrong pick it up" but it was too heavy for us. Eventually we dropped it as I attempted to hop from the cockpit seat to the cabin roof. This was a move we had done many times on the O'Day and Catalina 22's we were sailing at the time but the C-26 stick was too heavy for just two guys. Once I figured out the gin pole everything went much better. Stick with the gin pole and it will pay off!

The gin pole method works very well. Make sure your shrouds are not
tangled and take your time. Also, be sure to connect the stirrups to the toerail to keep the mast from swinging from side to side. Pay attention to
the wind and when possible, try not to have a cross wind on the mast while
stepping. With the stirrups in place this isn't such a big deal but why take
chances if you can avooid them ?

Another vote for the gin pole!

Summer Shandy! Mmmmmmm.

Now all of a sudden I'm thirsty. Heading to Alabama in a few days and have to pick up a few cases of Leinnies to give to the folks down south. The boat is at Port Wing right now (south shore lake superior). May move it to lake pepin next summer and am fantasizing about sailing it down the mississippi.

Welcome aboard 38special and as a C-26 owner as others have said gin pole and bridles are the only way to go. I have even lowered my mast underway to go under bridge in locks and I was under the height with the gin pole sticking up.
