Just a little sailing news: the 103rd Chicago to Mackinaw race is on!

Here's a neat application to check out the progress. Each boat carries a transponder that provides updates every 15 mins. Kinda cool!

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Two sailors died when their 35-foot sailboat capsized in a storm, while six crew members were pulled from Lake Michigan by another boat competing in the annual Race to Mackinac, the Coast Guard said on Monday.

And a bit more. A sad day on Lake Michigan for sure. We were at our slip in Racine with light winds.

While out sailing Saturday we saw a huge sloop on the horizon with carbon fiber (dark gray and shiny) sails. We were only able to manage about 1.5 knots at the time so a closer look wasn't in the cards.

Wow, there was some speculation that they lost the keel, but after seeing the video it's apparent that it wasn't a self righting boat. Sad

We lost two veteran sailing Michiganders.
The sea is like a devilish mistress, she is the most beautiful thing that you've had the pleasure of enjoying. She is also the evil woman that will take your soul.
Our hearts go out to the families of these sailors from Saginaw.
