Okay, Guys-

Most of you know I'm starting to do some rebuild work on my old 7.5 Merc due to a bad reed valve. Well, check this out: I just got my mits on a sweet 9.8 for 5 bones. Thing runs great, first pull. Compression is outstanding and equal on each cylendar.

Here's the problem: Short shaft. My 7.5 is a long shaft, this one is about 5 inches shorter.

Here's where I need your help: Check out these pics. I think I'm okay, but I need your advice. Seems like it sits deep enough. Hey Alan, I looked at some pics off your gallery, and I think this will sit just as deep as yours, maybe because my mount is a little lower. But it looks like this lower end sits about the same depth as yours. Do you have any problems?

I know if I'm in some rollers, I'll be fanning the tops of waves, but just want to know if you think this'll be kosher.

In the second picture, it appears the tilt of the motor is further down than the first. The cavitation plate is below the bottom of the boat which is where it needs to be.

Looks good to me. If you're uncomfortable with that, is there any chance of the extension piece from the old motor fitting the new?

Hey mark, that looks like a long shaft motor to me. Merc makes three sizes in their lower units, short, aprox 15", long, aprox 20', and an extra long shaft at around 25". mine measures at around 28" from the top of the transon hanger to the center line if the prop. It's an extra long shaft model. At any rate, looks like what you have will work.

Same location both pics, second one I just squatted down to the same level as the cavitation plate.

Thought I might swap the lower ends if they matched, but I'm thinking I don't have to.

Yeah, a fin, I wish. Benjamins! Still, about a third the cost I've found them around here.

Your first picture seems to show a problem no one has addressed. At the distance your prop is from the fantail, it appears there's no way you can re-size your rudder while the motor is running. You've got to get the motor more vertical in order to get that good rudder-munching capability.

I think you are correct. Your motor looks to me like your motor will be as deep in the water if not deeper then my Long Shaft 9.9. As I'm sure you've seen on my motor, I have to run with the rudder locked in the down position.

Good catch Paul! How will I find my way back to port without the fiberglass breadcrumbs?!

Looks good and if the boat is not low enough in the back end then you might have to stop at Tim Horton's for a few more jellies and sit in the very back of the boat.

I do have a long shaft (bodda-bing!) on this motor and an extra long on the 7.5, based on j-mac's measurements.

Looks good to me Mark but I would readjust the tilt so it is level with the water.

That tilt angle is as good as it gets, my merc is the same way. Works good in the water.

The Cal21 had a lousy angle when bolted directly to the transom. Wound up making two shims to go between the transom and the Garelick mount brackets. They were about 2 inches at the top..still pushes the stern down a bit under power.

I DO have a bit of a wedge on the transom, but nowhere near 2-inches at the top. Might change that or adjust the motor side of the lift.

You may want to swap that prop out for a power prop.
