Sail Numbers vs Hull Numbers

Post by EmergencyExit »

Probably the best way to see if there is a sequence of sail numbers that follow the hull numbers is too collect some data.

If some of you will email or PM me their model, hull number and sail number I'll see what comes up sequence wise and share. That probably would be better than us winding up with a bunch of hull numbers made public I think..recently read a story about a poor boat owner who found someone had gotten their boat registered by lifting his HIN..

So far we have one C22 and one C26 with both hull and sail numbers, thanks to Alan and Clair..need some more data, obviously..SkyKing pitched in his hull number but has no original sail number, thanks as well..

Here's some early C26 data...using Windward as the base mark, and assuming we use the full 5 digit number as the hull/serial number..

Clair's 79 SN is 7139 higher than Windward's 78 SN, but the sail number is 90 digits less.

lecker68's SN is 1235 number's higher than Clair's and the sail number is 709 higher than Clair's sail..

lecker68's SN is 8374 higher than Windward, and the sail is 619 higher..

It appears that the numbering schemes may have used the time-honored "infinite number of monkeys" algorithm

Also my build date is Aug.1980 so possibly one of the last built and I am the third owner and I live 45 min. from where the original owner lived and where the boat was sold.

Also Chrysler produced a lot of boats in numbers beyond our sailboat models, and each if them had an HIN as well, once that was required... And it doesn't appear that there were any model numbers incorporated into the serial numbers i.e. all C26's started with CBC26 followed by 4 more numbers..

So the HIN that follows the number on your 79 C22 may well be on the transom of a 79 Sport Fury..

And since the sails were not made in house they were likely made in batches completely apart from any thought from what boat they might go on down the road..

That's the most attractive option. I can get three more C26 HIDs, two C22 HIDs and a C20 HID this weekend (assuming I make it to the boat and remember to do it once I'm there), but probably not sail numbers.
