Well, my theory is KISS
or "Keep It Simple Stupid" ( stupid is in reference to me, not you )
Without going to deep, I'll leave that to others that may decide to . . .
When sailing the very general rule of thumb is keep your sails LOOSE in lighter winds and keep them tight in heavier winds. Pulling the back stay adjuster allowys you to pull the forstay tight, bend the mast, and effectivly flatten or tighten up the genoa or jib and is a great manuever when sailing windward or in heavier winds. Loosening the backstay adjuster will loosen the forstay and release any prebend you've introduced into the mast and is a great move when sailing downwind or in lighter winds.
remember as a "Mast Head Sloop" the adjustments are not as pronounced as a "Fractional Sloop".
