A: 3 short -- going astern
B: 2 long 1 short -- overtaking to starboard
C: 2 long 2 short -- overtaking to port
D: 5 short -- Danger
E: 1 Long -- rounding bend
(I got this one through process of elimination. I've used 1 long when leaving the dock, and had forgotten about this use since it's not part of my normal operating environment)

Glad all went well in the "containers in the mist" scenario. Would have been frightening, for sure, especially when you could hear but not see it.

C: 2 long 2 short 1 ) Overtaking to port
D: 5 short 5 ) Danger
E: 1 Long 4 ) Rounding a bend or obstruction

Hmm, this week we only had one taker for the question however, nice job, you got them all!

The extra info about the signal sent to another boat . . .

This guy was sailing beautifly along the fog wall. He was sailing directly into the path of a ship. The signal sent by the ship was 5 short blasts indicating danger. This sailor instantly taked back the other way and all was well. Had he not reacted properly to the signal I might have had a set of horrible photos instead of cool photos.

Knowing some basic sound signals really can save your skin and your boat.

Scott,
Thanks for the story, pictures and quiz. I didn't answer because Jeff's answer seemed to be correct, although I would have had to look up a couple to be 100% sure.

We had a foggy morning on Lake Michigan last weekend, but we were snug in our slip. We went out later and the fog faded but never went away. We had at least 1 mile visibility, so no troubles.
