I am considering purchasing a Chyrysler 22 and would like to get some feedback from some of you regarding the pop top model verses the non pop top. Are there any associated problems with the pop top, leeking etc?
In surveying a 22 are there any areas to pay special attention to?

I think the really BIG question is if you are going to overnight on the boat much.

I day sail my 22 and have never spent the night on her. Thus the pop top would probably be totally waisted on me! I'd never use it!

I know Alan has a pop top. I wonder if he has actually used it other than playing with it!!


If I were to over night on her then I most certainly see a benefit.

I don't have a need for a pop-up, and they're few and far between.
My friend has a Catalina 25 pop-top and cruises very long voyages in summer, he told me he never uses it until he hits his head and remembers its there. My humble opinion... just another leak point.

Since there is no room to really walk around anyways, it's seems like a waste and as already stated a place for a leak and hardware to break down. I would not let it stop me from buying one especially if the price was right though. Might be nice if it was raining for a little extra air below and for entree and exit.

My 22 has a pop top but I never raise it. It might be a useful thing if you used the galley and cooked in the cabin. I also have a small leak somewhere around the pop top area that is hard to find. Maybe it was more oa a marketing feature than a practical one.

I had a Spirit 23 with a pop that we used often. It may depend on the temp that you sail in. In central Texas it gets hot. Anchor - pop the top. Over night - pop the top.

My 75 C-22 doed not have the pop top option but it has never been an issue when we stay abord. The top slide forward gives me enough standing room. I would put clear curtains on a pop-top to make it like a dodger, other then that I like the structure support of the non-pop top thou.

My C22 has a pop-top, and I think once I start overnighting it will get lots of use. It is nice to rise at anchor for the extra room inside, additional light and air, and hand hold while walking around the deck. One of the spring projects I have is to design and build/sew a enclosure that should make it nice of overnighting on land or sea. I don't think the supports are heavy enough to act as a dodger while sailing, I always lower mine under sail. when it's down it's just as strong as the rest of the deck...I like it.

I wanted to thank everyone for the feedback. From the comment's it sounds like if I find the right boat with the pop top great but if I find the right boat without it that would be fine as well. My fist boat that we sold this summer because we outgrew it was a Potter 19, no pop top. I think the Chrysler 22 will feel large in comparison. I'm glad to know there is a community of people to offer experince and wizdom and will be asking lot's of questions if I end up with one of these boats.

I gotta say you right. I grew up around 25 footers being built and our 22's seem bigger inside. They really do have a great deal of inner space. I have yet to get to go aboard a c26, I'm almost afraid to, I may have to have one.
