I' redoing my rudder. Removed all old paint, a lil' filler and some new (good) paint and its great. My C-22 has 2 holes on the rudder base-plate, and there are two, much larger, holes in my rudder itself. Are there pins or something for these? It looks as if one holds the rudder in the up position and one in the down. Any help is appreciated.

Take a look at this link, there is some drawings of the rudder assembly. The holes in the rudder would be for the ropes to pull the rudder up and down. http://chryslersailing.lizards.net/sail_rudder.html
Yep, just run a couple lines up through the rudder post and I have a jam cleat on the tiller to hold the rudder up. I don't secure it down as I want it to kick up if I hit ground. I also added handles and color coded just to make everything easier.

OK, Trev, since I haven't had my boat in the water yet I haven't thought about this (also I don't have a rudder yet) If you don't use the cleat in the down rudder position, what keeps it all the way down when you're making good headway? I had assumed foam core rudders or wood and foam which I would think would want to swing back and float.

That is fantastic, very well done.
I will also "borrow" this idea.
Now the small holes in the "cheeks" (rudder plate), do tou just have som SS hardware with nylon rollers, or how is that set up?
Thanks again.

Paul - I have just enough tension on the pivot bolt that the rudder stays down but still lifts fairly easy.
Al - borrow away, that's whats great about this site.
j42goose - The bolt that the lines run around is SS with a nylon bushing that I found at the hardware store. Just running the lines around the bolt made it very hard to lift the rudder. I can not picture what I have in the 1/4" hole at the top of the cheek plate, could just be a SS bolt to keep the cheek plates from spreading to far apart. I'll be where my boats stored for the winter on the 22nd and will take a look if no one else says what they have before then.
