You can get tent poles at wal-mart for a few dollars. This was my first attempt and it is too high as it contacts with the boom so I only use it when I am at anchor. You are correct in that there are smaller poles that criss cross to make the shape. I have a couple of other ideas in mind one is a modified boom tent for maximum shade. The other is to criss-cross the main poles and this would bring the height down so I may be able to use it underway.

I think you could make it long enough foward to cover the cabin companion way too. That would also be real nice in the rain.

Wal-mart, REI or other camping stores carry fiberglass poles in different diameters, along witht he shock cord, as repair kits for tents.

We use what is an old rain fly from an REI tent. It covers most the cockpit and hatch. We've had to replace a couple of the fiberglass poles. I'll see if I have any picts when I get home or this weekend.

It's great for shade, and helps keep most all the rain off, but it's not like Capt Scott has on Destiny with vinyl windows and zippers. Were looking at adapting the pattern for the project boat and comparing the price to a kit from someplace like Sailrite.
