Removing wooden stern divider walls

Post by Zac Penn »

I need to remove my back stays and repair/re-bed them. I also want to add a stern rail so I need to gain access to the back portion of the boat, but those wooden divider walls, just aft of the seat lockers, are blocking my access.

Can I cut out the caulking and remove the wood to gain access to those areas? The red circles are the areas I am talking about.

Thanks Bill,
I saw that video when you first posted it, but I was hoping to find an access point without having to cut those large holes. However if I can't gain access then I will be forced to do that. I don't know how I would go about mounting a full stern rail without gaining access from below. :?:

Zac, if you are mounting the original Chrysler full pushpit rail you access the side stanchion mounting bases by crawling under the cockpit lazerettes. Let me tell you that if you need to access the rear transom mounts you will need those large access deck plates. The area behind those dividers is fill with foam flotation. Here is my video of work on the side stanchion mounts for the stern pushpit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grrYNRHI2g8

I removed mine....

Cut the bedding cuz the foam was wet and the bulge split the rotting wood. Bill is right, but you could use sn electric bread knife to cut away enough to get the acces you need... but the stern inspection ports may still be needed for the backstay and make it an easier access.

I replaced the wood and rebed it... have picts somewhere an will see if I can find them...

If you don't want the inspection ports, maybe as a compromise you could add some cockpit storage cuddies like these where you have to open up the transom for access..

Thanks for the suggestions and affirmation that I can cut out the foam without issues. I doubt removing a few cu ft of foam will be the difference of the boat floating and sinking when it is full of water. I assume that is what it is there for?

Correct, it is there for positive floatation should you decide to fill your boat with water!
