WA State Boaters Card
I have a question about the WA State Boaters Card. I have a port patrol acquaintance that keeps telling me that I have to have this card if I wish to take my boat in the Puget Sound. I have other people that say otherwise & when I look online, it only says for boats with motors over 15hp. Mine is 9.9hp on my C22. I have no problem getting it and I will. I just want to know in case I don't get around to it by the next sunny day. Any help is appreciated

Excellent question and the fact you even ask is a great thing! Thanks for bringing it up.
In short, you do not need one if your motor is under 15hp.
However if I may impose on you a little further . . . . .
The law is being phased in. The phases are by age. If you are over 40 this year you are exempt this year. Eventually everyone will be required with no age exemptions.
Two other exemptions.
1) motor under 15 hp.
2) you carry a valid Coast Guard Marine operaters License. ( Captains license )
FYI: I am over 40, have an outboard less than 15hp, and have my license so I am exempt for all three reasons yet . . . . .I carry my boaters card.
Next year you have to be over 50!!!!
So, even though you do not need your card, get it anyway. It will make you take a look at all the other needs your boat may have to be legal!
Speaking of Puget Sound,
Where are you hailing from? I sail out of Everett Wa and was out last night for about 4 hours on my C22! Little chilly, very overcast but the winds were perfect! 10-15 kts and 1-2' seas! Makes for great sailing since all the power boaters go away! LOL!
May be fun to hook up some time for a small Chrysler get together!
Alan Hodge is in my neck of the woods so we could get 3 boats if you are near by pretty easily!

The Coreth is slipped at Boston Harbor in Olympia. I would love to coordinate a get together. I am currently working on re-running my electrical wiring. When I bought the boat, the keel was seized, cable broken, rudder assembly corroded, hull in need of sanding and painting, no working lights, stanchions & starboard lifeline missing, and keel cable through-hole in need of repair. Electrical is my last major project before I take her out very far. Then, any projects that need done can be done anchored somewhere. Teak wood sanding, windshield snap replacement, etc. Happy to have this forum to come to. Cheers!
