What are the chances of one family owning 2 houses roughly 500 miles from one another having the eye of the same hurricane come within 4 miles of both?We watched the predictions and tracked Irene. Predictions had her coming ashore along the NC beaches then making a straight line along the coast and coming ashore in NJ with a 6' surge.

Whenever we come home from NC everthing is put away as if a storm was coming.The distance from home and the fact that we both had jobs made it prohibative to go down and get ready. the Jersey house is only 2 hours away so it wasn't a problem to go down there and secure for the storm. They were predicting a 6' surge which would have put water well up into the house. We secured stuff outside, put some stuff in the house and brought the boat home to Pa. As it urned out Irene made landfall at Little Egg inlet at 5:30 AM Sunday.Luckily the 6' surge didn't happen and the water only came up to the 1st step going up to the house.The only cleanup was raking some seaweed off the yard and removing the plywood from the picture window.

N.C. was a different story. She hit there Saturday morning. We were in touch with neighbors that stayed. They told us about our Venture floating trough the neighborhod and another neighbor's Shamrock going across their yard and backing into a tree line. There was a 9' surge along with wave action. the wave action in our boathouse must have looked like a huge waashing machine.

Our house is on an off water lot a mile from our boathouse and dock. Other than 4' of water in the garage we had no damage. We left a house in Pa with electric and hot water knowing we'd have neither down there.We took a little microwave that would run off the generator. I also tried to figure what tools and equipment to take. We spent about 15 days down there. Compared to the older homes down there we were very lucky. Those people lost all there possesions as well as their cars.

We both retired in June. In July,I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and am recovering from my prostatectamy now. That gives me time to sit at the computer. There are some pictures. They are taken on 2 cameras so there are some repeats.

Sorry to hear about the damage from the storm, but even more so about the cancer... we all hold to the hope that your recovery will be complete and that it wan't keep you off the water for long.

Clair hope the recovery continues well and glad to hear you fared well in the storm. We had tracking Irene and preparing and people south of us toward New York City and Poughkeepsie brought the big luxury yachts up the Hudson river to Troy at the Federal lock and at home they did not get hit as bad but from here to troy we got hit hard and they were trying to protect their big toys.
