running lights help needed
Im looking into adding a deck light/running light combo unit, any thoughts on how high the light should be placed? my current running white light is mounted at the front of the mast and almost at the top, this doesn't seem right to me, any thoughts? thanks

Mariner when my old steaming light went bad I had no masthead light for an anchor light so I put one on that I made out of a stern light from Walmart and wired separate from running lights it also adds another feature as it is right below the wind vane I have an illuminated wind indicator.
Catch the wind and ride the wave, Have fun

I have a wierd result. I combined an led running light with an incadescent foredeck light. Bought both lights off E-bay and disassembled and rebuilt. I did use the same location as the OEM running light on the front of the mast for one simple reason - there was already a hole there for the wire to exit.
Tranquil Chaos
The OEM location, near the top of the mast, meant the furled genoa could block the light from some angles and that the deck light was a long ways fro the deck. I put Windward's steaming / deck light just above the spreaders. Just converted the steaming light to LED, but still using the halogen deck light bulb.

Hi Mariner,
So far my lights are all in the OEM positions except the stern light. I moved it up off the stern rail up about 42 inches on a pole with a new LED 360 degree. Bow red and green light combo replaced with LED light that looks like the OEM combo light.
The mast steamer light is still OEM but I purchased a new mast steamer incandescent bulb/deck halogen bulb combo unit I bought last summer to be installed, hopefully by the end of the month. Also got a new LED 360 degree anchor light. No OEM anchor light on the boat so this will be a new install.
Here's photos of what I have now before the anchor light and new steamer/deck lights are installed.

(Sorry this is the OEM light from behind. the New LED light looks the same in the same sport.)

Here's the lights I have on now and the one's about to go on the boat:
Red Green Bow Light:
Attwood 3500 Series Stainless Steal 2 Nautical Miles. LED Bicolor Combination Bow Light: 3520/3540. (Notes: VERY bright, very easy install and I paid $32.00. I installed them 3 years ago, working strong.)
Stern Light:
Attwood 5530 Series: Articulating Head LED Light. LED Anti-Glare All-Round Light. This is a removable pole 42" long. (Notes: I've been told by the marina staff "that is the brightest stern light they have ever seen, please turn it off." Also installed 3 years ago, the light/pole is stored in the cabin till needed at night. I paid $32.00 for it. This was an error though. it should have been $60.00 plus but they had it marked wrong on the shelf so sold it to me for the marked price.) I stick the pole/light into a PERKO light socket mount at the stern. That cost me about $30.00 as I recall.
New Steamer/Deck Light Combo:
Aqua Signal Series 25: 225 Degree - 20 Point Masthead/Foredeck Light. 12 Volt DC/10 Watt Masthead Light, 12 Volt DC/20 Watt Halogen Foredeck Light. Note: Not installed yet as it takes a 3 wire setup to install and the OEM wiring is 2 wire. $54.74) Side note: the Halogen bulb is not covered! it is out in the elements bare bulb. I don't like that but I will still use it.
New LED Anchor Light:
Aqua Signal Series 22: All-Round 360 Degree Anti-Glare Navigation Light Certified to 2 Mile Viability (USCG & ABYC) 4" Pedestal Mount Part No. 22040-7. $23.87 (Note: 2 wire setup up not installed yet. I will put this in when I do the Steamer/Foredeck light.)
Thanks
Alan
