John looks like you are talking about the blocks to run lines from the mast to the cockpit. Not sure what size lines you have for your halyards on a C26. I'm sure some one will help.

As for the size. I don't know what to tell you. Harken (sp) blocks came on my boat from Chrysler. I've only needed to replace one small block but I replaced it with a Harken. That block I replaced was a loast block not a broken block. I figure all of my OEM Blocks are in good shape after 35 years of use, it must be a good brand. The tiny Harken I bought was I think $25 so they are not cheap.

I looked at West Marine first I believe and they were more expensive then the shop I did buy it at just a few blocks down the street from West Marine. I don't remember the name, its not a chain Marine store. Just a kind of junky looking store that has everything you can think of at a good price.

Again I'm sold on Harken so buying it off the Web if the price is good would work for me. Best price would get my business for the same block.

So as for the size, I would base it off of the ropes/lines diameter you are running up the mast for your halyards. Any C-26 owners out there have a size or dimension to recommend?

Nice hinge plate, it may have come with the sailboat when you got it, but I have a couple of uninformed questions. The four little blocks screwed into the mast step itself... could not four free hanging blocks of the same size work just as well connected to the openings on the plate? Just which lines would run through these blocks... also the six screws holding it all down would it be wise to add a bit of length to them to compensate for the thickness of the plate?

Mine came on the boat, but it really isn't a hinge plate. It looks like John's is a hinge plate though.

You could probably shackle blocks to the holes, but of course they would end up at an angle away from the mast. You would end up with lines some distance from the mast, and the deck. My setup keeps everything tidy and close to the mast and cabin top. Also with the blocks higher there would be some side load (actually vertical in this case) on the cabin top turning blocks.

I have four lines running through these blocks, cabin top turning blocks and rope clutches. They are:

Main Halyard
Jib Halyard
Topping Lift
Main Reef Line

I had this mast step hinge built for me. I plan on having the blocks shackled I am worried the height of the ropes running along the deck may become trip ropes.

Nice job John
excellent photo documentation on the project. I really like the SS collar around the OE fiberglass pedestal. Is that fastened mechanically or just with resin?

You may have mentioned it and I missed it, did you have to cut anything off your mast or adjust the length of your shrouds?

I just looked at picture 12 again. Could you tig another piece of plate onto the angled plate with the holes? This would hang vertically just outboard of the SS collar. You could slot or enlarge the existing holes so your haylards will passthrough them. Then you could mount turning blocks onto the newly added plates lining them up with the holes above.this would put the lines right on the deck and still hinge with the mast.

Just a thought.
