the one thing I can say in respect to outboards and the opening on a C-26 is a Johnson or Evinrude 9.9 or 15 2 stroke long shaft fits and tilts out of the water like the sailor outbards did with no modifications. I am a happy Chrysler owner with my 15 it has extra power if I need it.

(let the rambling start) Because my Chrysler 10's have walked off and not found there way home yet we bought what was suppose to be a well serviced evinrude 9.9 which has me becomming an out board machanic.
Haveing the right prop like Alan says makes a big differance, that was lesson 2, haveing to clean the carb and make sure that gas wasn't left in the bowl was lession 1, both fairly easy fixes its just not the best time to learn when your out there.
What I have going on now is I have to keep sqeezing the fuel line balb to keep it running which it does very well, or so I think never having owned or operated an out-board before. Kicking around the web has lead to lesson 3, any vacuum leak in the fuel system will create this problem, this includes the fuel line and connectors and what I know believe to be my problem (only because I replaced my fuel line last time out) The fuel pump on the 1978 9.9's is a diaphram set up that if becomes faulty won't suck the fuel in and leak into the vacuum port to the cylenders. I know this because What was found that the fuel pump was also pumping an excessive amount of fuel directly into the crankcase, which settled into the bottom cylinder and going out that cylinders exhaust port & then into the exhaust housing of the motor.
Rumor has it that the evinrude 9.9 is just a de-tuned 15 (smaller jets in the carbs) but I haven't confirmed this yet.
( No Alan I don't think the C-22 needs a 15hp unless you want to water ski from the back of your boat lol)

Winterization
When putting up any of my motors, I use the same procedeure for all of them from my 6 hp up to my 150. They all run in salt or brackish water so they all get flushed. I add Stbil to the fuel and remove the intake cover. after running for about 5 minutes I move the throttle up to a fast idle and spray fogging spray into the carbs until the motor stalls. Done!!
Then I drain the lower unit grease checking for water in the grease and refill. If you find water, then you have the entire off reason to reseal the lower unit.Liberally spray the motor with WD40. I use a spray bottle filled from a gallon can. Then spray the linkage with Deep Creep or a lifgt aresol oil. WD has no lubricating properties.
Put new properly gapped plugs in and you should be ready for spring when your motro should start right up. Don't forget to add Sea Foam to your first tank of fresh gas.
Strange time of the year to talk about winterizing...but you asked.

When testing in the spring don't just use the "ear muffs" that hook to your hose for cooling water. When using them you're forcing water in, so it may appear that your water pump is working when it's really not.
Yeah, I learned that this weekend.

I too have suffered outboard woes this spring.
Along with gunk in the carb I discovered my fuel line bulb was at fault too. As it turns out, the check valves had become gummed and would not direct fuel as needed. It was as if the bulb was just shuttling fuel back and forth in the line. The engine would run about long enough to burn out a bowl full. Made for a couple of interesting dockings. Replaced the bulb and seems to be fine now.
