What bodies of water do you sail?

Just curious where does everyone sail?

We tend to sail in Possession Sound Near Everett Wa. It is in the North end of Puget sound.
We day sail a lot and do a lot of crabbing in this area!

Our yearly vacation takes us North to the San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands. These trips find us in the Straights of Juan De Fuca and Straights of Georgia as well as all the waters in between. We'll take 2-3 weeks off work and just head North! LOL!

Where sail you?

"Deaths Door Passage" Yikes!
Sounds like it was named for a reason! LOL!

Death's Door was originally "named" by the Pottawatomies from a war with the Winnebagos when hundreds of warriors died crossing it with canoes (pre 1676). They told the story to explorer Lasalle (1676) who marked his early maps as "Port des Mortes" which still appears on many maps. Today it's called "Death's Door" and is the origin of the name of our county (Door County, WI). It was treacherous for sailing schooners in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to currents, fog, & shoals resulting in hundreds of shipwrecks. But the name comes from before that.

I am still a newb as I just purchased my first sailboat this past summer. And I happen to live in Michigan. I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones, because we have the largest fresh water sanctuary in the world in the Great Lakes.
So far I have only sailed out into lake Michigan outta South Haven. I am hoping next summer to get out there and go from marina to marina.

Only a smaller lake in Central Ohio. I do race her every week all summer long. Hope to drag her to Erie next season for a week or so. Wish this forum didn’t have such a small limit on the picture file size or else I’d post one.

We hope to sail our newly acquired C-20 on Kentucky Lake at Land Between the Lakes. Didn't manage to get on the water this fall as I was overcome by events like repairing the trailer.

I could use a couple tips.
For example the rudder raising and lowering system has issues, especially raising, Anyone taken theirs apart and serviced?

Second question is on points of sail. How does it point without lowering the retractable keel, at least in light winds. The c-20 draws a lot of water with the keel fully down. Any tips or thoughts? would be appreciated.

As far as the rudder, I have completely rebuilt a couple of C22. Make sure the lines don't bind. Make sure the rudder can freely move up and down. One thing I added to one of my C22's was little "T" handles to the lines. I also used color coded lines so I always knew which line pulled up and which pulled down. The T handle helped a lit too.

As far as sailing without the keel. I would expect her to not sail to wind well at all. Lits of side slip. But again, I owned a C20 but never had the chance to sail her. Broad reaching or running, I'd expect her to do well!

On my C22's I would at times partially lower the keel or even run downwind with the keel up.
Maybe you can sail her with the keel partially down?

Hope I'm not jumping in too late. I launch a Chrysler 26 at Coulon beach park on the south end of lake Washington, in Renton, Washington. I do a lot of lake sailing, but love to go out the Seattle ship canal into the Puget sound. If i sail the San Juans or Gulf Islands I often Trailer the boat to Anacortes and have the boat slung into the water and sail away. I was happy to see that someone else is sailing Chryslers in the Sound!

Welcome!
There are several sailors in the Puget Sound with Chryslers! I wonder if we've crossed paths! We frequent the San Juans and Gulf Islands pretty regularly and see Chryslers there! I've tried hailing on the VHF but have never received a response!

The San Juan Islands and the Gulf Islands are kind of a big area. I've sailed there on "Pneuma" just a few times. A real sailors paradise! To be honest, I sail mostly between May and September. I've sailed the San Juans in January. It felt like I had the place to myself.

Tim,
I keep Brigadoon a Chrysler 26 up in Sequim , WA and have only been out in the Straits a couple of times. I was wondering what kind of ground tackle you use and weather you use chain on it. I've purchased a rockna 10 but have yet to spend any time on the hook out in any real weather , most of my sailing has been on Blue Mesa Lake in Western CO . on a Macgreggor 25 , a much smaller and lighter boat than the Chrysler.

Hi Rick, since you did not get a response,
on Destiny we use an oversized Bruce with 100' of chain plus 200 ' of line.

Of the 15+ years on Destiny the Bruce has never failed us once set. Only time I could not get her hooked was in Fox Cove off Sucia Island. There was not enough room on the sand stone bottom to allow lots of rode. We tried twice to set anchor and quickly decided to just go drop anchor in Fossil Bay. We have a 35' Danforth as spare and have never used it. We did need a stern line at Butchart Gardens in BC and Chatterbox Falls.

Keep in mind though if you ask a hundred sailors about the best anchor and you will get as many answers!

Sorry, I lost my link to this page.
Rick, I have about 200ft of 1/2 inch Nylon anchor line, with 30ft of 3/8 inch chain. I use about a 10lb or a 15lb Danforth anchor. Using an additional smaller line, I run a weight, 5lbs, (part of a mushroom anchor) down the anchor line 10 to 20 feet to improve my scope and limit my swing. My target is to drop anchor in about 40 feet of water.
I have anchored in Saratoga pass, off Cama Beach in 25+ knot winds and a fair current without any dragging.
The 15lb anchor doesn't fit in the forward anchor locker. So, it is stored elseware

Good to hear from other Chrysler sailors,
Tim Brown

New to the forum and to sailing.
Have a Fixed Keel C26 in Whitehall Michigan, so mostly out on Lake Michigan.
Wife and I both grew up on boats, but she spend her childhood in White Lake where our boat is now while I grew up on inland lakes. Still working on getting the hang of it all, had a good friend sell me his C26 for a starter for us when he upgraded to a Bristle last fall. So far has been wonderful and only looking forward to more and more time on it. ( most so since sailing weather has finally got to west Michigan )

No but I would like to. I know of a couple of 26's that go to the Bahamas. I would take mine there without even thinking. Solid boat!

The fella that went to the Bahamas in a 26 is Guilliame c ( miss spelled his name ) he used to post here regularly. He is from Quebec CAnada. I believe he made the trip in 08 and has an extensive blog about it on YouTube . He also did some extensive modifications on his boat that are documented on this forum. He did some nice work that is worth looking at. Try looking on utube for sailboat trip to Cuba.

I plan on making some modifications also. I am going to put the shrouds on new chain plates attached to the outside of the hull and go one size larger on the shrouds. I already have an electric inboard and closed up the outboard motor well. I may also do some bracing on the tunnel for the swing keel.

I started to read his blog, good stuff. this is the best so far: "As soon as we wake up we bring the gasoline cans in dinghy to fill them, the sailing ships that are supposed to leave from the first hour of the day are still at anchor and inactive, strange. The weather is not too bad but far from ideal, 20-25 knots S which will turn NW during the night with the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. After a little dinghy tour with different boats, we learn that this is the reason why everyone sleeps. I would be tempted to do the same but the weather of the next days does not look better, I hesitate to leave having never been on the ocean. The anchor is nevertheless raised at 10:00, the smallest sailboat of the bay leaves the big heavy behind! Everything is fine but as soon as we head south, we take the waves from the front, you can not get out of the sail either, unless you're tackling but with a 22-hour day to go, it's better to spend a little fuel and follow the shortest route. It's moving forward, yes, but it's brewing too and we have a slight seasickness, Audrée takes the force-feeding as a cure and it works so I imitate it temporarily. The hours advance and the wind forcibly changing direction, which allows to mount the mainsail and genoa, the boat is more stable as well. The night arrives and is very dark, the sky is covered with clouds and the wind blows according to the forecasts is 20-25 knots, nice atmosphere for a first navigation of night! Eventually the seasickness returns to me but much more intense, while I lie down thinking only to not vomit, the wind intensifies and one finds oneself over-weighted ... Good, must go on the bridge to fight with the sail, I miss everything because I have no desire to have to go back ... Back to the bench to continue the struggle to seasick. By chance that Audrey feels good at the moment! Once this damn heartache left we can put the genoa that easily pulls the boat to its speed of hull, so it is under this single sail that we see defile Atlantic City for several hours. The wind is 25 knots and waves about 5 feet, the boat is comfortable and easy to steer. In the wee hours of the morning, the weather is cooler and we can not wait for the sun to come up to warm us up and help us not to bang on nails. We arrive finally at Cape May for 8:00, after 22 hours of sailing to cross a distance of 120 nautical miles,"
