Before I asked the question I had already boughten two seven foot long pieces of 1/4 inch StaSet, which should be plenty strong for the purpose. I have the IdaRudder replacement rudder on my boat and the groove for the rope on it would accommodate 5/16 at largest. The 1/4 inch seems to fit nicely in the groove, so I will most likely give it a dry run and see if it will do.
Thanx for your help and info.

I have decided to go with 5/16 inch lines for raising and lowering the rudder. My IdaRudder has a groove for the raising line that will accommodate 5'16 line and the holes where the line feeds thru to the pocket for dead ending in the rudder are drilled for 5/16. I placed the rudder in the bathtub and filled about 8 inches of water...it floats on its side with about 99 percent below the surface and only the very top of the rudder side at the surface level. This should make raising the rudder very easy when in the water.

Hi Bill,
I think you'll be happy with that!
A little extra for you . . . . I've been known to be out sailing in wet and cold weather. This can quickly sap the strength from your hands.
A small T handle at the end of the lines with a stopper knot in the line can take what is normally pretty easy and make it a piece of cake in all conditions!
