ICW

Post by jeremyh »

Not sure if this is the right place, but I am planning to sail the coast of North Carolina.

Planning this trip hopefully August or September. I would like to do a "round trip" So should I start in the North or in the South?

What would you take on such a trip? I am staying in the ICW and hopefully within sight of land the entire trip. I have an inflatable dinghy that I plan to tow for emergencies and probably shore picnics, etc. Could I complete this trip in 9 days?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated and I am happy to answer any questions.

Sail Magazine did a series of articles on an ICW trip this year. Couple of links that might be helpful on their site at:

DO you have any thoughts at all of where you would like to start? Depending on that, the ICW could mean a lot of motoring. We are on the Bay River near Oriental. Depending on your comfort level the Pamlico sound can offer a wide range of sailing and destinations. You can sail to Ocrakoke, New Bern, Portsmouth village, Manteo, Belhaven/Bath or Washington. Some of those destinations are up wide protected rivers. If you go back and check on some of Windwards posts you can follow his voyages around the sound. For several years that was an annual event for him.

you can put in at Oriental. There is a really nice ramp there. No overnight parking but there are accommodations nearby. From there you can plan a nice 9 day cruise. Just watch your charts and know where you are. There are some restricted areas including a bombing range.

I'll be away from internet for awhile but ask questions if you have any. If I get to a signal I'll surely answer.
