Hurricane Irene

Post by hp18carr »

Let us keep a candle burning for our fellow forum members living around the Outer Banks of N.C. Hurricane Irene may hit there rather hard as she passes by off the coast.

Irene's outer band started here about 45 min ago 4:00 EDT and I got soaked but My Getaway is on the trailer and the other sailboats here are safe and I have 2 powerboats available to chase boats if needed with a friend of mine from a marina.

Last one like this was 1960 Donna and I was 6 and on the water with my dad and ended up motoring a 40' sloop for 11 hours and I will do what is necessary and hope to not have to go out at all.

Thanks for the thoughts... Wilmington dodged the bullet for the most part with only minor flooding and a spattering of downed trees, power was lost to a number of locations but did not stay out more than a day. The shelter I helped man did stay open from Friday till Sunday with the patrons taking it all in stride. Those further up the cost I'm sad to say were not as fortunate this time around.

We got hit hard 14" of rain in 7 hours the marinas in the creek were more prepared but not enough we had water moving at 15 knots the boats that were in were turned facing the current and they were ok planing at the dock but stayed we however had 40 boats that had been pulled and floated off their stands or trailers and all you can do is herd them in the middle till they get to the river and try to get them anchored but with 2 boats an 5 to 10 at a time we could not prevent damage on all but only 3 were lost.

Just checked the boat and it looks fine. I am glad I pulled everything out including the outboard. Had a little water centerline but it wasn't much. I think I will pull it for the season and try to get a head start on the keel pin repair.

Thanks for the inputs on what to do.

I finally got My Getaway Back in the water about 3 hours ago. 4 hours of moving logs and debris off the ramp that is deep enough.
