Gas tank question

I am new to my boat (Relentless) and am still setting it up (1979 Chrysler 26, swing keel). I need a gas tank for the outboard. I am wondering what other people have including sizes (# of gallons, and if possible, dimensions) and where you have it located. Right now my battery is in the portside lazerette, but maybe that needs to be moved? I don't want it inside the boat for obvious reasons. I was planning to put a tank in the stern lazarette that has the drain holes, but wasn't sure if this is a good decision or not, and am not sure just what size I could fit there.

Thanks!

I use a 6 gallon for my 6hp 2Stroke Evinrude on my C22. I'm not familiar with the 26. The tank fits snuggly inside the rear storage compartment in the cockpit. It may be a while before I'm back at my boat, but I'll try to snap a picture if I can remember to.

by battery in my C22 is inside the boat as close as possible to bottom center. Since it's heavy IMO it should be as close to center of centerline and as low as possible to help make the center of gravity as low and near middle as possible. Not sure why it can't be in the cabin if it's in a battery box and it's a sealed battery?

Hello,
I have a 1977-C26 and I use an attwood 6 gallon gas tank. It fits in the starboard side of the aft lazarette. The only issues I have had are due to government regulations banning vents on gas tanks. The attwood tank fits quite nicely in the compartment untill it gets hot or the tank sweels due to pressure. Then it can be bothersome. You have to loosen the cap and release the pressure in order to slide the tank over for filling. I leave the tank in the boat all the time as it fits quite closely and is a pain to put in or remove with gas in it, especially if it is full. I have had some other pressure related issues, so this year I am installing another device sold by attwood that stoppes the fuel until the fuel pump calls for it. I'm planning to go over and tinker around with the boat today so I'll try to take some pictures. Hope this helps.

Stern Locker was where I put EE's 6 gallon Attwood tank. It does fit in there, but you may find you need to tuck one back corner one first, then the rest of the tank follows ok. I put it there because I could think of other uses for the one on the port side, but couldn't think of any other use for the open to the back stern one

The 6 gal Attwood is what I use as well. I've noticed that I have to really tighten it down when sailing or it can leak when at large heel angles, but then I have to remember to loosen it to vent or it will swell considerably in the heat.

It was a little concerning at first and took me a second to figure out. After sailing and setting anchor I went down below and could smell gas. It took me a second to realize it was because the boat was on a lean and gas was leaking from the container.

hmm, the factory separate 3 gallon tank that came with my Tohatsu 6hp is vented but never leaks when heeled. Not sure why, never thought about it.

I use a plastic 3 gallon that fits easily in the rear lazarette -- but I need a much longer range and wanted about 10 gallons -- was thinking about a flexible bladder somewhere down below with a auxiliary fuel pump -- but might be unsafe -- is this the gas tank discussed above ? -- http://www.attwoodmarine.com/store/prod ... with-gauge
