Do I need to take my C26 out of the water to replace the Keel Cable?

Post by D_McBaggens »

Hello,

I'm a relatively new owner of a 1978 C26. When trying to take it out for a simple Day cruise, I had a problem trying to lower the swing keel. Back in the slip I realized the cable was pretty gnarled up in the winch gear. I was able to take the winch apart and reassemble, but I'm pretty sure the cable is damaged and I need to replace it. I have never done this, nor do I have any idea where to begin.

Do I need to take the boat out of the water to repair this? From what I have read on the forum, looks like I will need about 7' of steel cable (3/16"). Anything else I should be aware of? Any help would be appreciated!

Sorry no one got back to you. I don’t check the various subject parts of the forum very often. Hopefullly you have already fixed the problem but if you haven’t you do not need to take the boat out to replace the cable. Diving on it with the keel down works fine.
