Arrgghh!

We spent last weekend on the boat for our last full moon this season,,, probably.

Light winds and then they died altogether, but Sunny an in the 90's at home so we swam and relaxed...

Woke up Sunday morning an while having breakfast saw this:

Was glad we didn't have strong winds, OK there was no wind! So we didn't have to decide if we should sail back to the slip... but we did use the tiller and made it back without having to stear with the motor...

Now I have the tiller at home to get a new attachment fabricated before we can sail again!!! I needed to be working on the project boat anyway, but we are hoping the season isn't done! I don't have a spare, and ya it woulda been a pain if things came apart in some of the winds we've been in over the last few weeks, so really, we lucked out there...

Any help from you all would be appreciated. I'll be looking around spokane on Tuesday and am thinking of just having a SS one made in the same dimensions... or maybe someone can Tig weld it for a quick fix for now, it is made of aluminum...

Any thoughts???

I made the rudder head and tiller mounting for our boat out of stainless. If there is a metal supply warehouse nearby, you could have the 3 plates cut to length, drill the holes and have a welding shop join it together. Doesn't look like a season killer to me!

Here's mine, PO made it from stainless then added extensions as an afterthought, I guess.



As you can see, the rudder shaft collar is still the original aluminum.

The pics there are from before I finished installing it. The tube for my rudder head has 3 drilled and tapped holes, 2 on the back and one in the front, all 3/8x16. The 2 in back are set screws and the front one is drilled through the rudder post as well and has a 1/2" long bolt securing it with a lockwasher and loctite. Been out quite a few times without any problems since the install. I must mention that the previous owner had the rudder post and cheeks re-done in stainless.

I took it to a welder who should have it done today.

Will probably winter project a new mod using SS an your ideas, an thanks for the offers an hhelp! You guys rock!
