Sorry to hear about the misfortune whilst out on the lake! Fortunately no major damage to anything, but your pride. The definition of sailing is "countless hours of tedious boredom, interspersed with moments of STARK TERROR!". We have had similar conditions here lately and it makes for gre...

WOW! That's a scary thought. Glad to hear there were minimal consequences to hitting a power line. As you said, it could have been much much worse!

Too bad we don't get these conditions more often!

First off let me say that I hope everyone in Irene's path are safe and didn't have any negative effects due to the storm! I have seen the damage that a hurricane can inflict. Had quite a bit of wind here today on Florida's west coast. I assume in part due to Irene. Weather report estimated 15-20 kno...

We have a Garmin 72H and it works great. Price was $150, it's the base model marine handheld by Garmin. We bought it for the delivery home and learned how to use it on the ride back. I want to get a 76CX just for the map features that the 72 doesn't have and keep the 72 for a backup. I use it for sp...

It's not a requirement to have a vang, but it helps to control the boom off the wind in heavier air or bouncy seas. I am planning to install a boomkicker and an 4:1 vang and a single cascade for a 8:1 total purchase. I have seen the 4:1 premade vangs on ebay for about $100. You still need a bail on ...

I can't help with I.D. of the engine, but check spark, fuel and compression in that order. No spark could be a number of things, plugs, bad coil, charge coil, kill switch grounded or wiring. If you have spark (nice bright bluish white spark, not a weak yellow spark) pull the plugs, ground the wires ...

Couple projects accomplished over the last week.

Even as busy as I was the last couple weeks at work, I did manage to get 2 1/2 things done. Installed a new main halyard and ran the tail back to the cockpit with a cheek block and a rope clutch a few nights ago. That upgrade I am VERY happy with, went out today, the hoisting and halyard tension adj...

Check your existing mainsheet. Original might have been a 3 to 1 purchase, but it may have been upgraded since it was new. My mainsheet is now a 4 to 1 and needs almost 60 ft. Something else to think of... I just installed a new main halyard and ran it aft to the cockpit with a turning block and a r...

First, get the keel down. The boat will heel less at all wind speeds and track better upwind. Think of an airplane, the wings need the tail for control. Second, when it starts heeling get everyone sitting on the high side. The boat weighs less than 3000 lbs, so any weight applied up high on the rail...

I have a electric winch on my C22, and I had the same thought. The issue is that the electric winch could rip the bridge deck right out if your not paying attention when the keel becomes fully retracted  I have marked my keel cable every foot so I can count down to keel up with out putting ext...

how about a electric winch with a remote switch?? it would be easy too Trust me, I seriously considered an electric winch, but I have decided to K.I.S.S. Besides the initial cost for the winch, wiring, switches, etc. I like the simplicity and reliability of the manual unit, just don't like the loca...

Interesting idea. The main draw back I foresee is banging your shin on the handle and things like sheets and clothing snaging/tangling on it. Does sound cool! Maybe a quick release on the handle too! : ) Scott I agree 100% about not wanting to tangle the mainsheet up in the handle... especially at ...

Relocating the keel winch.

I'm looking to see if anyone has ever relocated the keel winch. I'm contemplating moving it aft next to the rudder post, winch itself mounted inside the port side lazzarette and the handle passing through the fiberglass wall. The previous owner single handed frequently, so he moved the winch on top ...

I had one made at Seco South. They build lots of rigging for the manufacturers. I had it made of 3/16" 7X19 stainless wire. They 7X19 is the correct wire for going around a winch spool. 1X19 is more for standing rigging without a lot of bending required. I had them make it 10' long as I can sho...

Thanks again for the welcome reception! I never had a problem with water coming up the rudder tube, maybe haven't had enough wind yet to get the speed up. To be honest, the boat isn't in that bad of shape. It needs a lot of little detail items. The previous owner sailed it regularly and I'm sure he ...

Thank you for the compliments. Tried to avoid having to bring anything to a machine shop. I have crawled down in the stern and inspected the thru-hull, hose and clamps. They look solid still but that is one task I have on the list when I get it on a trailer.
