Typically, I do not take photos of my work. I'm satisfied if the requester is satisfied and then it's on to the next job. I'm not a doctor or scientist and I always figured that when they hired me they were not looking for one. I am a mechanical designer, machinist, welder and cabinet maker. I was p...

We're not getting any younger

My disclaimer, I am not a doctor. I attended a medical talk yesterday given by a colleague I've worked with for the past 14 years. I designed and built most of the hardware she has used in her medical research never really seeing the "whole" picture of her work but I found the talk to be v...

I like using these new plastic coffee containers for storing small parts, the ones with handles. I think I've removed every fastener on the Maudie Kay it it makes pretty easy to keep track them. I use a stick on label to identify the contents. They also come in handy on a boat, for snacks, storage, ...

One end of the pole hooks to the mast. Usually there a SS ring, sometimes mounted on a track on the leading edge of the mast. The fixed length cable with the ring in the center is used to attach the topping lift to support the weight of the pole. The forward end of the pole usually has a down haul r...

Being quite mad (insane) I've messed about with electric power for a few years now. I haven't checked into outboards but there are lots of electric heads on YouTube including me, but I'm no expert. I thought it interesting that the Torgeedo uses brushless motors very similar and possibly the same as...

I did some checking and was unable to come up with any on a Merc electric. I did check out the http://www.torqeedo.com/us/hn/home.html which is pricey but looks pretty good. I don't know how handy you are you could build your own using a serviceable lower unit and this http://www.electricmotorsport....

Fin keels usually have SS studs embedded in the casting, my Cat 25 has five that look to be about 1" in diameter. The keel will need to be well supported and movable once the hull is lifted off, the weight given is around 1010lbs. You might be able to remove the toe rail on one side to give you...

Two weeks ago when we finally had a real thaw, the lake outside the break wall was liquid. There was still ice offshore to the west of town maybe 300 yards out, looking out on the lake, pretty blue green. I went down to check on the Cat25, to open her up and remove the undersized outboard bracket. T...

Stanchions are one part of a boat that should not be skimped on. Your life or someone else's might need to depend on them one day.

The question I would ask myself, " how much do I plan to trailer the boat and for what distances" before investing in it. Your photos show a box frame and an axle that looks plenty strong enough for the load, that appear to be in good shape. A tandem would handle the load better and will e...

Although I've never built one I'm familiar with the process. I've built a few rowing shells using 1/8" mahogany plywood on sitka spruce stringers, they are durable and lighter than a comparable strip planked version. The oldest boat I built is going on 22 years now. I like the look of the strip...

Having sailed the Cat 25 a couple of dozen times last year, no one seamed to have a problem with the traveler mounted across the cockpit. The boat came very well equipped thanks to the PO. The car alone Harken #2744 is something like $350.00 from Defender. The track and ends would set you back another 2 to 3 hundred US dollars. It's not a complicated system, the main block shackle on the car is in a slide which opens up the jam cleat ...

My Cat 25 has a vang anchored to the mast base and a Harken traveler system with Windward Sheeting CB cars, set up very similar to which describe. At first the setup seemed awkward, limiting the seating in the cockpit, but the way it works out, one person has plenty of room between the track and the...

The fleet is in cold, 12 degree, storage at the moment. The Maudie Kay has been covered since just before Thanksgiving. I added a potting shed, for my wife, to the back of my garage, so I could cut a hole in the back wall to accommodate the 26' + of my racing single. I don't think the first mate has...

I wouldn't glass the outside of the hull unless you can glass the inside as well. Doing only one side of wood or plywood will seal that side pretty well but the other side will expand and contract at a different rate which is bad for the finish. I would just strip and paint. I used porch floor paint...
